Quoting limited to 3 levels deepnot
What with?
Intuitively, I'd say without great risk that they'll be looking at roughly the same level of player as us. If not the first year, then the following one. IMO, people who assume that they'll just happily turn into perennial Motherwell-types are deliberately neglecting several factors, such as the constant lure of potential investors from Australia, South Africa etc I'll ask you again. What with?
Our turnover and wage bill is miles higher than theirs. They can't afford the same level of player as us. They have no chance of getting bank debt, they are pissing money up against a wall and their support is revolting (no change there).

How do you reckon ? If the League's already a foreone conclusion, where's the incentive to significantly add to the squad?
So that people actually want to buy tickets to see us play? So we don't get absolutely hammered in Europe again? So Remy can have a hero again? All of that, and more. I've addressed your first two reasons in a prior post.
1-yes, if attendance figures seem to hover close to a preset "floor" figure, we'll see action. But we're not there yet, given among other things the appointment of a new manager fulfilling in part the curiosity factor.
2-IMO the board have calculated that expected return vs necessary expenses for near-assured CL progression is not worth the risk this year.
Will be absolutely ecstatic to be proved wrong

Been saying it for years, Celtic and all the fanbase need to start benchmarking ourselves to respected European teams with modern outlooks, not McGills Bustardos FC.

Hey, I had as much fun as anyone with the blue-painted coffins being carried around carparks etc, but, whether we like it or not, they're a global brand just as much as us.
Remy, I just can't see their wage bill remaining static beyond the first year back.

I would be genuinely surprised if the huns won a) Consecutive titles and b) 5 or more titles in the next 20 years.

This chat about the huns is not so irrelevant after all I feel.
The irony being we were in a position both on and off the park to put ourselves way out of their reach for a generation, I'll bet you a dollar that we start spending again when the huns mark IV arrive to put pressure on our guaranteed CL slot.
As barking mad as it would have seemed 18 months ago, I think we are 18 months away from seeing it happen.
Thanks PL, you've played a blinder!

Indeed, but I wonder whether it was at all possible to put some "insurmountable" distance between us and them, given the domestic setup.

Indeed, but I wonder whether it was at all possible to put some "insurmountable" distance between us and them, given the domestic setup. I don't think there would have been a point in doing it, if we were winning league after league with them miles off the pace folk would get bored. The league is quite stagnant anyway and is being left behind by alot of the leagues around us. Attendances for a 7 in a row season with huns finishing 30 points off the pace would be worse than they were last year and players we would struggle to get any decent cash for players unless we went on a big european run.
Think we need to realise we are a big fish in a small pond and we arent moving anytime soon, its sad but thats life. In a few years league one clubs in england will be offering wages similar to what we can offer.

I live in the real world so don't have massive expectations in relation to the signings we make. I understand the restrictive circumstances we operate in and I don't expect us to sign Messi et al. However, i just feel that despite the years in the CL and the massive transfer fees we have taken in as well as freeing up wages, the team just seems to be getting worse with each passing transfer window. As a supporter I certainly don't feel that we are a better team for the CL campaigns. Last season we played very poor football for pretty much the entire CL campaign, only scored in 2 of the 6 group games, lost 5 out of 6 and got our arse handed to us by Barcelona (which is excusable) and a very poor Milan side (less so). And this is compounded when you read stuff like this: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2554412/Celtic-spend-8m-summer-big-signing-boost-Neil-Lennons-Champions-League-hopes-says-Peter-Lawwell.html where PL is quoted as saying we could spend £8m on a player and will have 'substantial funds' to spend. We are never going to spend £8m on a single player (and neither do i think we should) but don't insult our intelligence by pretending we might. We are now at the situation where we are going into our most important games of the season weaker than we were last year. Last year we were weaker than the previous year and squeaked through a tie that we should have won comfortably. And eventually it is going to come home to roost and we are not going to get through one of these ties. if i was a betting man, i suspect that come the end of the transfer window we will have a variation on 'we tried to get a few things over the line but didnt quite manage it'.
Spot on. Lawell has also told us in the past that it's always the club's aim to come out of a transfer window stronger than we went into it. That clearly didn't happen last summer & I would be astonished if it did this year. After last summers disgraceful window I have reached the point where I have no expectations. Still some people will believe & accept anything.
Last summer we signed Pukki (£2.4m), Biton (£700k), Boerrigter (£1m), Van Dijk (£2.6m) and Balde (£1.8m). A decent level of funds were made available. Whether it was the fault of scouts, Lennon, or a combination of both, the signings made were poor. The board can't be faulted on that one IMO. Having lost Wanyama, Ledley, Wilson, Hooper (most of the spine of our side) and dropping the wages of Lassad, Miku, McCourt, Rogne and Murphy.
We replaced Wanyama with a project, Ledley with someone who the jury is out on, Wilson with VVD (the one success story) and Hooper with a striker who wasn't even near first choice replacement by the looks of the sorry saga. I'd also seriously question the quoted £2.4m on Pukki. I severely doubt Lawwell would fork that out for a player in his last 12 months.
We came out that window very much far better off financially and far worse on the park.
