The league which over achieves most in Europe these days is Portugal.

The reason for that is their immigration law and the short length of their season.
The Portuguese League is increasing from 16 to 18 teams this season to accommodate Boavista who managed to overturn a judicial decision from 2008 (!!!) which relegated them for alleged referee bribes. Although back when the decision was made curiously, the main protagonists seemed to be Porto who "suffered" a 6 point deduction, which didn't stop them winning the league.

The Portuguese are therefore expanding their season by four games, which may be out of necessity, but the fact that they are suggests to me that they don't think their overall success as a league is down to a short season. Leagues all over Europe are adding games. Greece, Belgium, Holland and Poland have all added a play-off system in recent years.

The Portuguese League also has some of the most questionable player ownership rules on the continent. Why do you think all of these players end up leaving Benfica and Porto for stupid money? Because the clubs own 50% of the rights to the players, at best. Look at the recent case of Markovic for one. In fact the whole cosy relationship between Chelsea and Benfica requires much closer scrutiny.

Let's not hold them up as some sort of paragon of virtue. They've got the same abominable level of football administration and naked self-interest found everywhere else.

Anyone that thinks that summer football wouldnt improve our game is one of them dinosaurs with their head in the sand. Give me a single valid reason that our game would be worse off.
Oh aye, one of those dinosaurs with their head in the sand.

I didn't say it was all good, but it has to be acknowledged.

Good post. Pablo5 has a point though - their league still does punch above it's weight on the field, and the immigration laws clearly are helpful in that area - not just Brazilians, but the number of Africans (Amido Baldé included) that clubs there can sign.

I am surprised they are going to 18 clubs (even if they were forced to) as that will surely just add 2 low quality sides... their league already contains a number of makeweight teams who don't add anything.

the media coverage that football gets in portugal is absolutely staggering. It dwarfs anything I have ever seen in the UK - it really does seem to be followed by the whle population. Unfortunately (a bit like in Scotland), they all follow the 'big 3' clubs, and many others seem to play in empty stadiums.

Their coverage has barely any pundits. That's a good thing.

Portugal's big advantage is third party ownership. Allows clubs to sign players they could never afford otherwise. Needs to be banned by UEFA, but won't be.

I thought this was the kind of thing UEFA were cracking down on? I notice Italian teams have been banned from co-owning players, which will have a huge impact on the transfer market there.

Didn't know that, think I read that Parma co-own something like 230 players

Co-ownership has been banned (in Italy anyway). Italian clubs have 12 months to sort out all their existing deals.

Robertson isn't away is he?
Thought Dundee Utd had bounced it back as the fee was just stupid.

Why the eff do Motherwell even bother turning up for European games.

Two certainties in life. Death and Motherwell being pumped out at the first hurdle in Europe.

Just, why??

So, going by results this week - Scottish football hasn't plunged to to LoI levels just yet.
