That's lovely. Wonderfully lovely :theclap:

That's wonderful stuff. Most of us have to content ourselves with trolling mere online football forums. The bold yin (isn't he also 'dubwiser' on Follow, Follow?) gets to use a national newspaper as his trolling playground

That's in The Record!

I read it on FF and honestly thought it was one of the inmates taking the pish.

It's the most patronising and idiotic thing I've ever heard.

Ryan Gauld on his way to Sporting Lisbon according to the papers. Would be a great move for him.

Sporting CF seems about a perfect move for Gauld if it happens. They are a medium to big size club who appear on the up compared to the way they've languished over most of the last decade, and they've got a well earned reputation for producing quality young players. They are effectively one of the best finishing schools in Europe, a bit like Benfica across town.

The Portuguese League has a well earned reputation for producing very technically adept players who play with their head up. The league is not that strong that it will spit Gauld out for being too slight or too inexperienced. There is plenty of chaff at the lower end for him to be tested against before making the step up on a regular basis.

Compared to going somewhere like Chelsea's U20 squad of international loanees and getting the odd Capital One Cup early round tie it is precisely what the lad needs to do.

Sad that he must leave Scotland to aid his development, if it happens, but there you go.

Disappointed that we don't seem to be in for Gauld but Sporting would be a great move for him. A great, historic club and one that knows how to develop talent. And he'll get opportunities to win trophies and play in Europe. Hope it works out well for him - I'd really like to see a Scottish player in his mould succeed on the European stage. A far better career move than moving to Wolves or someone of that ilk.

It's not sad at all. We're a tiny country. I wish other Scottish players could get out there and do something similar. Good for the national side and the game as a whole.

Young Scottish players moving to Sporting CF rather than Wigan or Derby is not sad.

However it is a sad reflection on the state of the SPFL that an 18 year old player who has barely played in 50 top flight games is considered to stand a better chance by moving to another league. For the record, as I've said, I think it would be a great move for him and one he should take.

If the Scottish League was strong enough, and the game played in the right way, there would be no need for him to move. He'd complete his finishing school here before he moved on to a better standard (if he proves himself to be good enough). The league is not strong and the football isn't good enough. If that is not sad for a country with a top ten UEFA league ranking from the 60s to the 80s, then I don't know what is.

It is merely more confirmation of the shocking level in the pecking order we are at.

Is it not £1.25m up front and the rest is add ons? At the price we should be in for him

No I wouldn't be so downbeat about it. I don't see many countries of 5 million being able to retain excellent young talent such as this. The best youngsters from Denmark, Norway, even Belgium, have went beyond their own countries' borders to develop their game. Traditionally most young Scots went down to England, however if Ryan Gauld goes there and is successful, then others may follow suit. It will also swell Dundee United's bank balance as well, allowing them the opportunity to develop more young talent in the future.

I've often thought that the lack of Scottish young talent going to continental Europe has been a big hindrance to the development of the national team, so this can only be good in the long run.

Just noticed that the league pyramid officially kicks-in at the end of this season.
http://www.highlandfootballleague.com/News/Item/434_The_Pyramid_System_and_how_it_affects_the_SHFL.aspx

Any relegated team north of Dundee (incl Dundee) will be relegated into the Highland League, all others to go into the Lowland League.

Quote:

Summary Notes on SHFL Pyramid System

January 31st – all clubs capable of becoming League Champions (based on points total &
number of games to play ) identify themselves

By March 31st- all potential League Champions apply to SPFL for membership
(clubs unable to achieve championship status need not apply)

Application - clubs will detail their ability to comply with entry requirements as per SPFL Rules
and confirm club’s willingness to comply with Rules on an on-going basis

Pyramid Play-Off Competition

a. League Champions of SHFL and SLFL compete home and away on agreed dates, organised by the SFA
Home team in first match to be decided by a SFA supervised draw

b. Winner plays “Club 42” from SPFL, home and away, organised by SPFL at a date and time determined by the SPFL Board , with Club 42 having home advantage in second leg

c. Winner of this tie will become a member of SPFL and play in SPFL League 2

d. If Club 42 loses tie, they will be relegated to SHFL if ground is north of Latitude 56,4513N

e. The winning club in play off competitions will be the club which scores the most goals over two legs. If aggregate scores are equal after second tie, extra time of 15 minutes each way will be played and thereafter penalty kicks to determine the winner

f. If either the SHFL or SLFL Champion Club does not meet with SPFL membership criteria, and no waiver is granted by the SPFL Board, no play off will take place. The other Champion Club meeting the criteria will play Club 42 as per b above

g. If neither Champion club complies with any part of the membership criteria as determined by the SPFL Board, there will be no play off competition and Club 42 will retain their place in SPFL League 2

Interesting point re the pyramid system.

I think that means that certain clubs - Spartans, Hibs, Berwick Rangers all have (or had) two teams in the pyramid. Spartans reserves, HIbs EOS and Berwick Reserves all played in the East of Scotland league last year, which is the level below the Lowland League in the pyramid.

So... surely with this precedent being set, there is nothing to stop Celtic running a B team/youth team/Elite Development Squad/whatever - in the lower leagues of the pyramid. U20 clearly does not cover all our requirements, and our U17 have been playing in the U19 League for SFL clubs (and won it). We have a lot of young players who are unable to get game time - surely we could run a young team elsewhere in the Scottish pyramid and hopefully get them some meaningful action (especially if they progressed through the divisions?)
