Going top of the SPL today yet bottom of the Celtic v Celtic table is perhaps confirming that the SPL needs a strong Deid FC.
Could you not also say that this could be due to increased competiveness??

absolutely, but I think we all realise that if Deid FC wurny deid, we'd not be top of the SPL with that points total.

any chance of adding what League position we were in in each week of the season as it adds a bit perspective. Going top of the SPL today yet bottom of the Celtic v Celtic table is perhaps confirming that the SPL needs a strong Deid FC.
Here's a rough idea of how things looked after 7 games in the SPL years. Generally, 14pts would have put you in 3rd place, leading the best of the rest of the SPL by a point.

After 7 games

I declare these stats to show that the SPL is far more competitive and balanced with the absence of a certain shower of cheating scumbags. :arrr:

Given our record breaking performance last night I though I'd do a wee comparison for the group stage Champions League matches.

After Match 1
PWDLFAWDLFAGDPts
Celtic 2008/091010000000001
Celtic 2012/131010000000001
Celtic 2001/0210000000123-10
Celtic 2006/0710000000123-10
Celtic 2003/0410000000112-10
Celtic 2004/0510011300000-20
Celtic 2007/0810000000102-20

Bizarrely the catastrophic 0-0 draw at home to Aalborg in 2008 was statistically our best start to the competition before being equalled against Benfica; it's all relative.

After Match 2
PWDLFAWDLFAGDPts
Celtic 2012/132010001003214
Celtic 2003/042100200011213
Celtic 2001/022100100012303
Celtic 2006/072100100012303
Celtic 2007/0821002100102-13
Celtic 2008/0920100000101-11
Celtic 2004/0520011300113-40

Our first away victory puts us a point ahead of the pace in 2006/07 and 2007/08 when we ended up qualifying for the last 16.

After Match 3
PWDLFAWDLFAGDPts
Celtic 2006/073200400012336
Celtic 2001/02 3200200012316
Celtic 2012/132010001003214
Celtic 2003/043100200021303
Celtic 2007/0831002100203-23
Celtic 2008/0930100000204-41
Celtic 2004/05 30011300216-70

Looking ahead to the next round of matches though, we'll do well to keep up with (or ahead of  ) the performance of 2006/07 & 2001/02. Obviously that'll be after 2 away matches, so again the stats don't tell the whole story.

Either way, we're at least in our third best position after 3 matches, having played only 2 :rocker:

I think if they were here we would not be on the points total we have at the moment.

We would have fielded stronger teams in a few of the earlier games, as it is without them to worry about we could take it a bit easier in those games knowing we would get the points back. It allowed us to concentrate solely on the CL for the first month of the season.

that's true too.

I'm not a lover of statistics, as they can skew any argument to suit whatever the agenda is, but it will be interesting to see if a Deid FC free SPL allows us to record our highest points total or goals for total.

We can only afford to drop 3 more points if we want to beat the highest points total.

Around this time last year we went on a 17 game winning streak. What odds winning every match from now to end of the season?

Not as high as they should be. We will drop a good few points between now and the end of the season, off days happen. Fully expect youth players to get more game time this season than in any season before so they will make mistakes that may well cost us the odd point as they are learning the ropes.

Match 8 Preview

Having returned to the top of the SPL last week, we were still a few points off the pace of previous seasons. The good news, courtesy of a disappointing 0-0 home draw to Motherwell in 2009/10, is that a 2-0 victory against Hearts tomorrow will equal our standing that season.

Todays 3 points levels the tally with 2009/10, 1 behind on goal difference. Still the poorest goal difference over the period.

The last two 100% starts to the season faltered at the ninth match, a 1-1 draw away to Aberdeen in 2000 and 3-1 home defeat to Rangers in 2010. Today's result is the fourth 5-0 victory at this stage and provides the boost to our goal difference we've threatened a couple of times in recent weeks.

Now only 5pts off the optimum pace, last season is put in perspective at the foot of the table, prior to our long winning run. How long ago that seems now, with all that has happened since. :lolhuns:

Our aim this year should be to win the league. After that I would like to overhaul a few significant markers from these previous 12 seasons. Not mega, world, never before done records but small personal club achievements.

2001/02 was probably our best recent season in the league. We attained 103 points, won 33 matches and only conceded 18 goals. None of the recent 12 seasons can surpass these totals . 2003/04 saw 105 goals scored.

If we win all our remaining matches we will amass 107 points and record 35 wins. At the moment we are averaging 2.11 goals and conceding 0.78 per game. At this rate we will score 80 goals and concede 29.

I would like to see an increase of chances converted and now that we have a more settled defence, fewer goals should be let in. Could this be a record breaking season all around despite the slow start?
