Unless Celtic Wiki's made a mistake somewhere, after tonight we've not only made our greatest start to a league season this century...

We've made our greatest start to a league season for 50 years, since the 1966/67 season when we won it all :worthy:

1966/67 = P9 W8 D1 L0 F34 A10 Pts 25/27 GD +24
2016/17 = P9 W8 D1 L0 F30 A8 Pts 25/27 GD +22
That is tremendous.

Great work.

Anyone know if there's a reason we ended up with only 3 home games compared to 6 away for Barnes first 9 games?

Knocked off the top today due to Martin O'Neill's side beating Aberdeen 4-0 in 2003, which will be followed by 5-0 in the 11th match so it'll take a 7 goal margin to regain the top spot next Saturday. The only team to have taken points from us this season better watch out lest we're in the mood for revenge :arrr:

Those stats really make you appreciate how great that MON side was. Though 6 goals from 5 away games is somewhat surprising. Excellent defensive record.

Brendan really is doing a magnificent job to hang with that kind of start. Love the goals for column under him

0-0 draw with Dunfermline was first game that season, other away matches were 2-1 (Partick), 1-0 (Dundee), 2-1 (Hibs) and 1-0 (Rangers).

From match 9 the big scoring kicked in: 5-0 (Hearts), 4-0 (Aberdeen), 5-0 (Kilmarnock), 5-0 (Dunfermline), 5-1 (Dundee Utd.), 3-1 (Partick), 2-0 (Livingston), 3-2 (Dundee), 2-0 (Motherwell) & 6-0 (Hibs) up to the end of the year. That's +36 in only 10 matches

Being 2 already behind at this stage we'd need to average 4 goal margins to hang onto O'Neill's coattails. Obv no shame in falling short, though would be some experience to come close :rocker:

I was surprised to see the 2004/05 team had such a strong start. My memory was we struggled to score without Larsson hence why we bought Bellamy in the January window. No point crying over spilled milk now but we must have had a very bad second quarter.

Losing to the Huns twice in 10 days in November 2004 (league cup then SPL) doubtless had a lot to do with it.

It was more a case of thirds.

For the first two thirds of the 2004/05 league season, our record was:

P24 W20 D2 L2 F53 A19 Pts 62 GD +34

Final third (as soon as Bellamy arrived coincidentally :ph43r: )

P14 W10 D0 L4 F32 A16 Pts 30 GD +16

We beat the Huns at Ibrox on 24 APRIL in that season to go five points clear with four games to go.

We promptly chucked that hard work the very next week in a baffling 3-1 home defeat to Mowbray's Hibs, before you know what.

It simply fell apart for reasons that are still not easy to explain, despite the issues O'Neill had at that time.

We had four home SPL losses that season. Aberdeen, Huns, Hearts and Hibs.

Mind we lost 3-2 to the sheep at home in the last minute after being 2-0 down early

I mind being quite relieved our last game was away that season cos our home form was poor :ffs:

We lost 3-2. They went 2-0 up after 6 mins, Hartson scored twice to equalise then they scored a 94th minute winner.

First time I ever attended a game at Parkhead that we lost

There was, remarkably, a game later in that season in which the sheep went 2-0 up inside the first 15 minutes at Celtic Park, though on that occasion the Bellamy effect enabled us to come back and win 3-2, with Craig scoring a belter of a winner.

Of course, Hibs came and pumped us a couple of weeks later - with a certain young Scott Brown on the scoresheet :suspect: - and all of a sudden the lead we had over the huns didn't feel so comfortable.

Then there Was the Derby Rab Douglas decided to have a complete shampooer in. Let a Gregory Vignal shot right in from 30-yards :ffs:

The only time MON ever lost a home game to the huns.
