The attendance thing is pretty harsh on our fans, it is expensive to watch SPL football. It is a shame so many people are priced out of the game, both in terms of match to match and season books.

However i do have a big fear that we continue to see many young boys and girls lured to support an EPL team due to the wall to wall coverage TV gives it.

I understand people can choose to have sky or ESPN but for BBC scotland to show MOTD on a saturday night where most young fans need to wait to sunday to see scottish football is costing us many fans.

I see EPL tops everywhere now, all teenagers have a Favorite english team, and more and more i meet people who have no interest in scottish football at all.
In my experience, in Belfast, people support who their da supports. My da is Celtic daft and there is a framed pic of me in my living room where I'm a half an hour old with my da's hoops (CR Smith  ) wrapped round me. I was always going to be a tim. My wee cousin who's da doesn't watch football and is from the other side of the community randomly took a liking to Arsenal as a young lad. I then brought him to Parkhead and he hasn't looked back since. He's 11 years old and he's a bigger tim than me. It's all about influences. If there is no one to show the kid the light then, chances are he won't be a Celtic supporter. I've a few beers down me but I hope I'm making sense

I think this is true, but many of these kids will support Celtic and Man U or Celtic and Man City or Chelsea etc. As the get older and become more aware of how pish the standard of the spl is and in comparison how readily available it is to watch their 2nd team, then the opportunity to sell them a season ticket fades.

I work in a call center with a lot of 18-25 years olds, there are a lot of celtic and sevco fans, but also about 30% of them support and english team as their primary team.

Now take into account what has happened at Sevco, i think they will possibly lose a generation of supporters due to their trouble. We will also have some younger fans who lose a bit of interest due to a lack of a old firm game.

What i will say is, the Green Brigade has been one source of getting young people back into games. And whilst i dont always agree with what they do or how they do it, i think it will bring a lot of young supporters back to the club, that may have been lost.

There ya go  never had a choice, not that I'm complaining ;)

I do get what you're saying, but I can only go by my own experience. The wee man I mentioned in my previous post CGAF about sevco or the team formally known as rainjurs, he just wants to see the Celtic. The more kids like that the better. If they want to support United, Arsenal, City..... It's their loss

Today's disappointing result continues a trend in recent years; we've now won less than half of our fourth round of matches in the past 13 seasons. Remarkable given that we've won every third match.

Celtic results 2000/01 - 2012/13

Match 2 totals1310213492532
Match 3 totals1313003682839
Match 4 totals1364326151122

Obviously having dropped points in 2 of our first 4 matches isn't one of our best starts to the season; 10th of the 13 seasons.

The good news is the stats suggest we will bounce back and win the fifth match; like the third round of matches we have won every fifth match since 2000/01.

It'll be of little surprise to most that today confirms our worst start to a season under the current 12 team SPL format. A full 7 points off the best 4 performances (winning every match) and 2 points short of the starts in 05/06, 06/07 and 08/09. We did rally to win the league on the first two of those occasions, though the end of season points tally remained to the lower end of the spectrum when compared with the other years. Most tellingly we have scored fewest goals and accrued the poorest goal difference this start to the season.

St. Johnstone have only been in the SPL for five of the 12 seasons under the current format, however similar to Inverness CT, the attendances have declined from the start of that period to several thousand less today.

Certainly a longer term downward trend, similar to Inverness. No sign of any response from the natives to turnout in greater numbers this season though. Anyone got any idea how many of the 4.5k empty seats would have been available to Celtic fans? From the ticket thread it seems they are pretty willing to sell to away fans on demand, unlike Aberdeen, Inverness and the like. Wondered if demand from our support has been saturated or if non-season ticket holders like myself would've assumed away end tickets to be impossible to obtain. Greater awareness of this would potentially lead to more fans making the trip.

In a season WITHOUT the huns, our 5 match stats show a worrying lethargy.

Can I ask why won't St Johnstone give another stand to Celtic supporters, looked terrible those two stands behind the goals, couldn't see the 3rd one but imagine the same going by the 6k, or would Celtic fill it anyway if offered, its about an hour away isn;t it.

If you take it back beyond the start of the 12 team SPL, it's a slower start than the Venglos season (by way of GD). You have to go back to 93-94, and Liam Brady's last season, to find less points. That was P5 W1 D3 L1 Pts 6, converting from 2 to 3 for a win.

We've always had both stands behind the goal before. I think one of them is being demolished to make way for a new motorway.

I agree entirely about turning kids away from Scottish fitba - the sportscene timing is ridiculous. Clubs need to be more imaginative about attracting fathers and sons along and actively work to shift what we know will be empty seats - price is an important element but there are other ways of making the matchday experience more appealing/accessible.

 Why limit yourself to half the population?

Yes. Meant to say I've been enjoying these posts (well, "enjoying" in the sense that it's good to be able to make the comparisons and that someone has put all of it together for easy viewing, not "enjoying" in the sense that the team is kind of crap and not doing so well ... ah you know what I mean). Nice work from Crossraguel.

We always sold out the two stands behind the goals but this time we filled the east stand and half behind the goals, probably took more than usual but not thousands more.
The stand knock down for the motorway isn't going ahead anymore.

Match 6 saw the end of two of the four 100% starts to the season - defeat away to Motherwell in 2002/03 and a home draw to Hibs in 2004/05 - whilst the remaining maximum points for seasons 2000/01 and 2010/11 were both maintained with home victories over Hibs.
