Given the general theory that Scottish fitba is on a downward spiral, I pondered the extent to which this may be reflected by players from Scottish clubs in world cup squads.

This year is the first that players from only one club, Celtic, have represented Scottish football. I have taken the figures from official FIFA squad lists, which include Samaras. Open to suggestions as to whether that is correct. Nil returns for 1930, 1934, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1966 and 1970.

Surprised how few Rangersb players went to the world cup over the years, indeed at Italia '90 their English players outnumbered Scots. Aberdeen had consistently sent players to the finals from Argentina '78 until Japan/Korea '02, not far behind Rangers, and still alive to enhance that figure.
Brilliant work

Frank Munro, John Dowie, Roy Kay etc.

We finished about fifth in the league. We were utter muck.

Seems like an apporpriate juncture to kick off the 2014/15 comparison. How will Deila compare with his illustrious predecessors O'Neill, Strachan, Mowbray & Lennon...

SPFL Premiership After Match 4
PWDLFAGDPts
Celtic 2002/03 44001211112
Celtic 2010/11440090912
Celtic 2004/05 4400103712
Celtic 2000/01440094512
Celtic 2003/0443101221010
Celtic 2007/08 43101221010
Celtic 2009/104310104610
Celtic 2001/02 431060610
Celtic 2013/14431073410
Celtic 2011/12 43018269
Celtic 2012/13 42208538
Celtic 2014/15421110377
Celtic 2006/07 42118447
Celtic 2005/06421110827
Celtic 2008/0942117527

Today's draw avoided the ignomony of Deila's opening four matches being the worst this century, above Strachan's 2005 start on goal difference, trailing Mowbray's 2009 Bhoys by 3pts and five off the full 12pts O'Neill & Lennon chalked up in 2000 and 2010 respectively.

The goals scored tally looks respectable enough off the back of our good start against St. Johnstone & Dundee Utd.; doubt many of the sides in the last decade and a half could have come away from back to back visits to Inverness and Dens with only one goal. Likewise conceding 3 in 4 mightn't always be as bad as the bombscare defending we're getting used to.

Onwards and upwards :rocker:

Is this the first season that we've kicked off with 3 of our 4 first 4 matches away from home?

Fairly average start, league-wise.

Our defensive record was pretty poor until around this stage of the season.

Our goals for record isn't that great. Guidetti and Stokes have managed a few but the midfield and wide players need contribute more

Thanks for this. Puts this years performance into perspective a little. Surprisingly good defensive record, shame about the goals for though, compared with martins time in charge we are nearly half the team we used to be...

Hard to believe that our defence has lost 3 less goals than at this point last year considering our defence was being hailed from all quarters last year...........
