Brilliant pic FLC. It's before May 1904 as that's when the Janefield St stand was burned down and replaced by the Janefield St enclosure below.
Looked at first like the war drills between 1914 and 1918 organised at CP but the stand predates that.

More like the Boer War

Was thinking of the Boer War too FLC but the Celtic Chairman of the time John H McLaughlin almost found himself usurped after outrage from the brake clubs after he backed the British effort publicly in South Africa.

I can't imagine the British army being allowed onto CP to put on a show in the 1890s at a time when the club's Irish support were more favourable with the Boer's position.
The puzzling thing about the pic is that it possibly disproves this assumption.

I think the pitchside advert bottom right says 'DUMBARTON', but it's really blurry and I might just be seeing things since someone suggested Dumbarton.

They changed into that uniform after the outbreak of hostilities because the Boer marksmen were picking off the British soldiers at an alarming rate.

They stood out like sore thumbs in their fancy dan colours so the high heid yins changed to khaki to blend more with the terrain.

Recruiting at halftime for the Boer War.

:ponder:
The pitch looks like a ploughed field. Must be close season.
We rarely got crowds that big in the early days.

It could either be a recruitment day which would surprise me or even a Scotland v England game between 1894 and 1900.

Could be pre match entertainment of the Scotland v England match in April 1900. Check the flag on top of the Janefield St Stand. Its the same and blowing the same way in the wind.

At Celtic Park there was a Parade of home and colonial troops during the coronation celebration in 1911, displays of trench warfare by wounded servicemen before they returned to action,

As you say CI the pic is much earlier and if its as early as 1894, it means that a few of the earliest photos ever of Celtic Park have appeared oan this excellent thread. :clover:

The 1911 parade was the first thing i was thinking too FLC but as the stand pre dates it i'm the same as you, its got to be earlier, pre May 1904.
The cycle track at the corner of the Jungle/Hun End is post 1897 when it was enlarged for the 1897 World Cycling Championship so i'd go for 1898 or 1900 Scotland v England match.
1900 wins it for me.
