I obviously have no idea about the geography of Glasgow and have learned a lot tonight but is it possible to walk around the Govan area in a Celtic coat for instance, I take it for granted over here in Ireland.

As a rule, unless it is match day I'd say that's not advisable, but 9 times out of 10 you'd probably be alright.

Would you really want to take the 10% risk though?

As some have said, it's possible in Glasgow to practically cross the road from a hun area in a Tim one and vice versa.

Barras and Calton being right next to Brig'ton is a case in point.

Yes, you'd probably face more danger (if any) wearing a Celtic top in the area around Celtic park than Govan.

My place of birth as well. Amazing the number of people I've came across who were born in st Francis.
There's a great film on YouTube called The Green Flutes, shot in 1984 about a republican flute band from Govan.

Although a few of the lads on it being quite young we're not as articulate as they might have hoped to be, their views on things like prejudice, discrimination and racism are pretty much on the money.

Anyone who says that republican flute bands are just the same as Orange flute bands should watch this film.

The band was undoubtedly a force for good in the community and fostered some very positive attitudes amongst the lads on the film.

It also shows Govan in the mid-80s which alone is interesting.

St. Ants. If you have seen it, do you know any of the guys featured?

If you were to frequent teh huddleboard there are many threads about republican flute bands and the rivalry between them. It is embarassing

Far from it!

Govan had two of the most prominent Celtic supporters' buses back in the day - Govan Emerald and Govan Brighton, the latter which left just behind the Govan stand at the snake pit if I'm not mistaken.

Two RC secondary schools too, I think - Saint Gerards and Saint Ants.

Also, the wine alley I am led to believe was pretty much a catholic/second generation Irish ghetto when it was there. Tommy Coyne being its most famous son in recent years.

I'm sure someone will correct me on at least one of the above points, but the fact is clear that it was far more populated with us than it was with them.

By contrast, we have Brig'ton on our doorstep and by my neck of the woods in Dennistoun/Barrowfield, there were plenty of huns. The Louden and The Duke - both major hun shops - were a stones throw from my house. :boik:

Calton aside, there always seem to be plenty of huns around Parkhead. Unfortunately, Parkhead's most famous recent footballing son, raised literally opposite the gates of the old jungle/Celtic end, was one Eein Feergisin!!! :boik: :boik: :boik:
In Govan in my day there were 5 CSC's, 4 chapels, 5 primarys and St Gerards sec school just off Broomloan Road

I had the 'honour' of being the Emerald treasurer for 8 years. One Scottish cup we won ina ll that time

Jim Craig, Joe McBride, Tommy Coyne, Ronnie Coyle all good Govan men :worthy:

The old winey was some place in it's day and don't forget St Ants juniors.

CB - Used to amazed me that you had all those midden pubs in Brigton and then within a short walk you'd be in Timland in the Barras (the area I mean not that mad shop)

Must have been war down there in the old days.
While you govanites are harking back to the old days any of you remember the wee
shop in Govan that done the made to measure Jumpers in the early 70s it was called Trendy.
The Urchin made the journey up on a 65 bus got measured up paid my deposit
I was all made up until 2 weeks later I went back to get it only to find that
the roof had fell in on the shop, gone was my deposit and gone was my one chance
of a measured jumper. The jumpers where mostly American college type but you could
design your own ,my big mate from Castlemilk used to wear his siters it had
her initial A on it and he used to say aye the P and the T wore oot.

Don't remember that shop but remember the 65 (the bee's hive we called it) which took you down Ballater Street to Brigton.

Many a window was panned in on the 65 before and after games due to the misbehaviour of the local monkeys :nono:

That film on Youtube is spot on. I know of a few of the guys, but dont know them. At the end of part two it lists them all.

The social commentary is spot on and nothing has changed since. Just Govan is dead.

I was born in St Francis Maternity Home in Govan in 1960. Stone throw from the Asbestos Dome.
You must have been the best stone thrower in the world - it's about a mile from the cesspit.
