Quoting limited to 3 levels deep
I've been over to Glasgow many dozens of times, my routine is to stay in Jury's, hang around the city center and I like to walk out to CP from town, when we bring a lot of kids over we stay in Irvine, let them go to the large leisure center there. I drove past castlegreyskull once but other than that have never been near the area, always assumed it was a no go area for those from the good side.
Far from it! Govan had two of the most prominent Celtic supporters' buses back in the day - Govan Emerald and Govan Brighton, the latter which left just behind the Govan stand at the snake pit if I'm not mistaken. Two RC secondary schools too, I think - Saint Gerards and Saint Ants. Also, the wine alley I am led to believe was pretty much a catholic/second generation Irish ghetto when it was there. Tommy Coyne being its most famous son in recent years. I'm sure someone will correct me on at least one of the above points, but the fact is clear that it was far more populated with us than it was with them. By contrast, we have Brig'ton on our doorstep and by my neck of the woods in Dennistoun/Barrowfield, there were plenty of huns. The Louden and The Duke - both major hun shops - were a stones throw from my house. Calton aside, there always seem to be plenty of huns around Parkhead. Unfortunately, Parkhead's most famous recent footballing son, raised literally opposite the gates of the old jungle/Celtic end, was one Eein Feergisin!!! In Govan in my day there were 5 CSC's, 4 chapels, 5 primarys and St Gerards sec school just off Broomloan Road
I had the 'honour' of being the Emerald treasurer for 8 years. One Scottish cup we won ina ll that time
Jim Craig, Joe McBride, Tommy Coyne, Ronnie Coyle all good Govan men
The old winey was some place in it's day and don't forget St Ants juniors.
CB - Used to amazed me that you had all those midden pubs in Brigton and then within a short walk you'd be in Timland in the Barras (the area I mean not that mad shop)
Must have been war down there in the old days.

Wine alley was a place of absolute legend to most other people from the city I think.
In the east end we had more than out fair share of areas that very likely rivalled it for social ills and deprivation. Barrowfield being amongst them, but for some reason Wine Alley was spoken about with real fear and trepidation.
Was it really as bad as it was made out?
How recently did it come down?
If I was making away trips to Ibrox from about 1982, would I have seen it?

Thats a great wee story mate. Those of us fortunate enough to know the old celtic park can relate to the magic of European nights under the floodlights. My nana and granda lived on Duke street and the walk down from there to paradise was something else. No matter how many times we did it my granda always pointed out the boot, ball and goals in the cobbles between Camlachie street and Gallowgate. Happy days
Great story CB. Mallorcabhoy - I can also recall being taken down that wee lane and being told the cobbles stories. As an elder member of this wonderful club, being a lifelong Celtic supporter I would like to share my memories with you all. My first game I can recall was against Hibs in or around 1957 at Celtic Park. My earliest recollection of a European match was against Lexios, from Portugal.I've been fortunate to see some Celtic greats,Johnstone,Murdoch,I recall being in the company of older Tim's and stating that in my opinion Wee Jinky played better with Murdoch behind him and being told that my belief was a lapse of a youthful ideas! I've been fortunate to see McGrain,McStay,Larsson,The wee ten-thirty,Dalglish,Lubo,Johnny Doyle the man who loved the green,DavieHay scoring against the huns from 30yds on a rain soaked Celtic Park in a Scottish cup tie.The 6-2 game against the hun.The 4-0 cup final,Euro nights against Nantes,Basle,Vojvodina,Dukla Prague, Ajax, Benfica, Real Madrid, ,both Milan teams,Barcelona,Man. Utd. All of these teams contributed to wonderful memories for a young Celtic supporter. I was at a Glasgow Cup tie,my first hun game at C.P. When we won 4-3, Charlie Gallacher hitting a post from a penalty! The Centenary celebrations, joyful times. The 2-1 league cup final at Hampden, both goals from Big Yogi's penalties.Meeting Big Billy at a function in Glasgow, a true gent and a fantastic ambassador for this club. Danny McGrain also was also a memory to cherish meeting him personally.Being taken to Salcoats as a youngster and being allowed in to Lennox's pub and meeting him was fabulous and something to tell my schoolmates and make them jealous. Seeing Joe McBride scoring at Easter Rd.was unforgettable, also in the same game Wee Jinky taking a punt from Ronnie Simpson on his instep and beating the full back in one movement.Amazing! Travelling from Rutherglen to Bridgeton Cross about 2:15 and an empty coal lorry would be waiting outside the station for the arrival of a train and hundreds(well probably a good few done would clamber aboard and get a lift up to Paradise. My auld man seemed particularly good at the timing of this freebie. The return of the Big Cup to Celtic Park, the guy climbing up the floodlight, my wee Maws first and only visit to Paradise that glorious night.Stopping the ten! Fabulous opposition players that have graced our famous ground.Wonderful memories, fantastic friends and fellow Tim's. Thank you all but most thanks to my parents, aunts and uncles for bringing me up in the faith.God bless them all and may those who have gone before us rest in peace. And finally thank you Mr. Stein. God Bless us all.

Edit. Double post. the winey was knocked down late 1980's although the big high rise flats in Broomloan court are coming down now. There was a bit i=of hassle when the council refused to rebuild houses on the area and built work units.
Celtic buses didn't park in that area they would have been in Helen Street which led to Govan Cross.
An English writer spend a summer in the Winey in mid 70's and wrote a book about it. Said he had never came across a greater sense of community spirit.

I was born in St Francis Maternity Home in Govan in 1960. Stone throw from the Asbestos Dome.
My place of birth as well. Amazing the number of people I've came across who were born in st Francis. There's a great film on YouTube called The Green Flutes, shot in 1984 about a republican flute band from Govan.
Although a few of the lads on it being quite young we're not as articulate as they might have hoped to be, their views on things like prejudice, discrimination and racism are pretty much on the money.
Anyone who says that republican flute bands are just the same as Orange flute bands should watch this film.
The band was undoubtedly a force for good in the community and fostered some very positive attitudes amongst the lads on the film.
It also shows Govan in the mid-80s which alone is interesting.
St. Ants. If you have seen it, do you know any of the guys featured?

Quoting limited to 3 levels deep
My place of birth as well. Amazing the number of people I've came across who were born in st Francis.
There's a great film on YouTube called The Green Flutes, shot in 1984 about a republican flute band from Govan. Although a few of the lads on it being quite young we're not as articulate as they might have hoped to be, their views on things like prejudice, discrimination and racism are pretty much on the money. Anyone who says that republican flute bands are just the same as Orange flute bands should watch this film. The two bands I recall best were the James Connolly and the Govan Shamrock.
About 1990 I was watching news at ten one night and the lead story was the first republican flute band to march through Larne.
There was a near riot going on and the camera flashed on the bass drum which had JAMES CONNOLLY RFB GOVAN on it.
The guy playing it was in my class at school.
Mental.
