I was thinking Fachetti was the captain.
Was he not their skipper in 1967?
His was the only penalty that nearly stayed out

I remember we were linked with him whilst he was at Morton. A few right good players we could have had in that period for relative pennies-but our 'custodians' wouldn't pay the price. Always seemed just a couple of players (mainly defenders!) from being a right good team.
Davie Hay wanted Joe McLaughlin and Stevie Clarke and had negotiated with them.

He thought he was going back in for them with a slightly upped offer as was and is par for the course - That feckin' Board has so much wrong to answer for.
Nearly.

I think it was in 1986 and Clarke was at St. Mirren, ending up at Chelsea. The reputed fee as I recall was £300,000, which we didn't match and Chelsea blew us out of the water with something like £500,000 :brickwall:

We were interested in McLaughlin and Chelsea were ready to do business at £500,000 or there abouts, which we were nowhere near. :nono:

Could you imagine going into the disaster of a season that was 1986-87 with a back line of Clarke, McLaughlin, Aitken and Whyte as opposed to...

Grant/W.McStay, O'Leary, McGugan and Rogan. :ph43r:

By that time DFMcG was running on fumes alone, but was still frequently the best in a poor back four when called upon to rescue them from themselves.

But if it was Davie Hay, he was sacked in May 1987, around the same time as Clarke went to Chelsea, so he couldn't have been talking to Chelsea about him.

For some reason Facchetti is normally asscociated with Being their Captain - Possibly because he was the one that Cesar most kept the links* with - Picchi was actually the Captain.

Sadly Picchi died at only 35 four years after Lisbon. :(

*Facchetti also died a few years ago and Billy went over of his own volition and expense to pay his respects at the funeral

Class Personified is Billy McNeill. :worthy:

'Them' I took to mean Chelsea.

Apologies.

I love this thread and am very grateful to all the contributors. One thing strikes me about football in the old days; referees always looked as if they were in their 60s. See the 65 cup final picture as well as this one...

Could be something in that tbf - Judging by the position of his badge that one's breests are already on a downward trajectory. ;)

"You are only two yards back from the ball - Move back another two yards immediately as per the "How to treat Timmy" rulebook so as to be fair to Mr.Burns and his colleague Mr.Conn and allow them the full four yards."
