I know this is a well known image but could the historians among you give the context of the picture. I read on one forum that it was staged for the press, can't see JS being involved in that?

Im positive its Kiev but not on match night. Im sure its from the team training ahead of the tie. Current European Champions at the time local fans came to see us train. The crowd in the pic obviously isn't anywhere near the crowd that attended the game. Have a look at the shorts, theres a green stripe down the side, not the official team strip.
I would go with the training session scenario - Cesar is smiling and too relaxed to be coming out to defend the Big Cup and hee haw crowd.
aah.. that would explain it! sorry wasn't tryin to be smart! Probably explain Big jock in the tracksuit as well!
I am fairly sure that photograph is of the team training ahead of the Dinamo Kiev European Cup Winners Cup second leg in January 1966.

The game, which finished 1-1, was played in Tblisi, not Kiev, and Celtic's return trip was beset by flight delays which resulted in the team arriving back in Glasgow late on the Friday evening and Jock taking them to Celtic park for a late night warm down.

We had to play Hearts at Tynecastle the next day in the Laegue and lost the game 2-3 with Hearts playing a fair part of the match with 10 men due to an inury (no substitutes allowed at that time).

The man in that famous picture, he stated in the article that Burton left a £10,000 tab at the hotel for the Celtic supporters to party into the night. A class act.

I think that this was taken at the league game at Dunfermline in 1968, days after Dunfermline had won the cup v Hearts.

The Dunfermline team paraded the trophy before tha match.

This was also the night when Celtic won the league and some Celtic supporters climbed on top of the East End Park terracing roof.

Jean ,Rae and Jock Stein - All now gone RIP

Rae was an Air Hostess - Don't think the guy in the back is her ex husband - He was a son of the Gartland Rolls people and a winker.

Only George the son left now. :(
