My auld fella took me to that game as a five year old so that I had seen this Pele and Gerson - He was like that just loved watching good footballers tbh and so do I to this day.

Anyways in that dark recesses of my mind (where even I wouldn't want to go too often ) I had that down as a night game :ffs:

Stevie Chalmers has Pele's jersey from that game.

Why did the Rangers end have a better roof than the Celtic end ?

Was it the Rangers end at the time it was built, or did the segregation come afterwards ?

They asked the celtic fans ; the noisy ones ; to move but it never happened.
Then round about 1973 a big group of fans (GBs da's or grandas ) moved from behind the goal into the centre of the Jungle. Really only happened because the crowds were down and they wanted to go under the old TV gantry and make sure they were heard on the telly highlights.

I was told the hardcore fans were asked to move round to the rangers end because it was all covered but moved to the middle of the jungle. When I was a boy and taken to the middle of the Jungle in the early seventies you got the mix of the hardcore younger fans and the older, flat cap brigade. In those days if there was a back dicision you had to avoid the cans and bottles raining down.Lateral movement wasn't a concern in those days!

The move to the middle of the jungle was made because the " hardcore" at some games really wasnt that big.
They moved at half time during a couple of games and then it just stuck.
Mainly east end, royston, easterhouse areas young teams and the football special lot.

The Celtic End roof went up in 1957.
The Rangers End roof went up in 1968.
The Jungle was re roofed in 1966.

Before this the only terracing that was roofed was the Jungle which always housed the young, "hardcore" fans.
(There was terracing in front of the roofed Main Stand but this wouldn't have been frequented by the "singers").

The reason for the half arsed roof going up in the Celtic End in 57 was the claim by the Board that there were mine shafts in that area.
The real roof went up in 1986 over the Celtic End and was pulled down just 8 years later.

A look back at the old maps from the 1880s show no mine shafts under the Celtic End, but i'm sure there was some work required under the Celtic End to put the big roof up in 1986.
(I can't imagine the old Board got away with totally making up a claim in 57 in order to put up a cheaper roof).
Yep i did just say that.

I'm no believing for a minute the wind up that the young team were asked to move to the Rangers End in 68 when the new roof went up.
Especially as they had a new roof 2 years earlier in the Jungle.

The strangest thing about that 1981 pic of Celtic Park is that although it looks old fashioned and delapidated, 3 parts of the ground were less than 15 years old.

In comparison 3 parts of the current CP are around the same age, albeit in a different era.

Before the move to hampden Celtic Park was mainly alright.
The jungle seats were shocking , the toilets were as well, but getting in and out wasnt usually an issue.
But they said it had to be seats.

I had an absolutely fantastic seat in the Jungle - bang on the half way line about row V.

Re mine shafts I also remember Fergus saying that more concrete had to be used than expected/budgeted for when building the new stand at that end.

Toilets in the Jungle were the worst ever. One pal of mine had to use pound notes to wipe his arse. He refused to use fivers.
