I've never heard any such thing at all but would be interested to... :ponder:
It's only my opinion. After a particularly dismal showing in the league the previous season we managed to qualify for this competition. Celtic fans made up the majority of the 20,000 or so at the 1st leg in turf Moore . It was an event that would have even relegated events at dens park last season :naught: and the Hampden riot to kindergarten status.
hundreds of drink loaded buses left from salubrious drinking men's pubs throughout scotland. This is what followed.

1) mayhem at service Stations which involved police with dogs and wholesale looting and debauchery. My 2 distinct memories from my supporters bus alone was one guy arrested and put in van with dogs. He was released from the van by Fenian vigilantes.however, he was bloodstained and missing his trousers, but in true celtic fashion still attended the match. While this was happening one of his mates was liberating a full tray of penguin biscuits from the service station which he liberally distributed to all on the bus.

2) as this was going on the football special was being stoned in burnley as celtic came face to face with organised football hooligans.

3) we arrive in the ground to find that little portable huts selling pints were dotted round the ground. The one near us was almost lifted off the ground and again liberal looting took place.

4) the burnley fans then decided to chant Argentina at us (funny how years later it was the other way round when the Malvinas kicked off) it was the one and only time that I heard some fans sing flower of scotland at our game. This was drowned out by soldiers song and chants relating to an organisation very much involved in the peace process, but seen in England as bad boys in those days

. 5)There was a no mans land between both sets of fans with 6' high iron railings on either side. A rangers scarf was produced cue mayhem. A sea of bottles and cans of used lager rained down on the burnley fans. They responded with an interesting tactic. The beer cans were flattened and then skyted back at us. The casualty count was rising and eventually a full scale rammy ensued. Celtic fans pulled down the fencing and used it as spears to throw at the police and burnley fans who ran onto the field. Billy came out to appeal for calm.

6) on our return to glasgow there was a lot of stories of celtic fans being ambushed. There was general agreement that the team didn.t put much effort in in the 2nd leg as celtic didn,t want a repeat performance.
You've got a great memory!

accurate in every detail. By some distance, the maddest night watching Celtic in UK (tho a pale second to Turin 81).

It was the fence going down - and spear throwing - that was the trigger for all the Burnley fans to get onto the pitch. It as the only place that was safe.

Loads of Celtic buses went down early to Blackpool for a drinkfest and then to Burnley. It as the huts selling beer that stunned everyone - at that point in Scotland, fans used to sneak drink into grounds by sticking cans of lager down the football socks under their baggy jeans. At Turf Moor you could buy it in plastic beakers. The place went into meltdown.

Burnley were not really known by Celtic fans then but they had a nasty rep which got worse in 80s

I remember going to school and the Govan Harp bus was just leaving the Harmony Bar.

When they came back they were raving about it. Drink, theft, fighting.....they thought it was magic

Our supporters have softened a good bit since then. Back in the day we had a severe reputation.

I travelled down to Burnley on the football special ,as you say the train was stoned [more ways than one]
and it seemed on the way to the ground there was pockets of Burnley fans with bricks and stones
lobbing them at Celtic fans ,there was also loads of graffiti of the not to pleasant variety aimed at
the Celtic fans, but I think the Burnley mob quickly realised they had bitten off more than they could
chew. The huts outside I actually at first thought they wher selling programmes and stood for 20
mins before I twigged it was actually bevvie they where selling.Inside the ground im sure Celtic
fans where at each end of the ground with the majority of Burnley fans under the big shed in the
middle ,I was behind the goal [im sure it was uncovered ] and watched the fight unfurl. Big Billy
was lucky not to be hit with a few missiles when he came on to the park ,im sure on the return journey
we got the same train with smashed up windows and a few more bricks lobbed at us on our way
out of Burnley,a crazy nightfor this 15 year old and I was glad to get back to the safety of 70s Glasgow.

I have related this story on here before, but as my father-in-law is 90 next year, please humour me as I repeat it.

At our first meeting, 32 years ago, the current Mrs BC warned me her dad was a bit shy and grumpy, "but he's good deep down".

Him: "Do you like gardening?"

Me: "No, never had a garden".

Pause.

"Well, do you like football?"

"I love football".

"Who do you support?"

"Celtic".

"Bloody hell! They wrecked our town".

Now, all those years later, he has been up to Parkhead a few times and we watch all the televised games on ESPN/BT together. We are now his second team, God bless him.

Original autographed sheet that Paul was planning to use in his book but it never materialised.

Not checked but many of them names will be on it.

Ano Remy, current players think if they put their number next to their sig that makes it ok.
