Great recent shot of the the great warrior. To this day when I see a picture of Danny the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, I would leave my wife for him  although I would like to keep that between us.
If you nicked one of those Celtic balls that go into the crowd, it would be a short-lived relationship.

I have said it before on this thread, but definitely the best kit we ever had (bar the '67 vintage of course).
Never went to a game at Shawfield. Any thoughts, memories, anecdotes lads?
I can't let you have any photos, but I do have great memories of Shawfield. My father was a Hearts supporter (don't ask!), so my first ever football memory is a Clyde/Hearts game around 1954 at Shawfield, which was a short walk along the banks from where we lived in Dalmarnock. I was 5, my brother was 3, and I remember being pretty bored! Come the 60's, some great games between Clyde and Celtic. Clyde had a great team then, they came 3rd in the old first division around 66/67? Joe Gilroy, Harry Hood, Alex Bryce, Sam Hastings- all great players. Plus my physics teacher at the Mungo, John McHugh. Also a great player, but stayed part-time, we all wanted him to join Celtic, but a teacher probably got as much as a footballer back then, or close to. The view was crap, thanks to the low-slung lights over the dog track, but I loved the place. That ground was Scottish football at its best to me- rough and ready, nothing fancy, but always great football.
The first Celtic game I ever went to was Clyde at Shawfield in 1957 IRC.

Although Celtic won it was not an entirely enjoyable event.

Due to the crush the young kids, myself included were lifted over the retaining wall onto the greyhound
track and watched the game sitting there with our backs to the wall.

Suddenly there was a surge in the crowd and a section of the wall collapsed on top of the kids.

There were many injured and one lad lost his life.

It was obviously my lucky day since the wall remained intact at the point where I was seated.

I used to go top Shawfield quite often when Celtic were playing away because I lived locally, exactly equidistant from Shawfield and
Celtic Park and my pal was a Clyde supporter .

Apart from the tragic accident, happy days.

Never heard of that, very sad that someone, especially a kid would lose their life going to what was meant to be a happy occasion.

Hooper ostensibly maintained that going to an EPL club would help his chances of an England call up but with only fleeting appearances for a struggling Norwich it would seem I have as good a chance as he does of making the English team.

John Thompson being removed from the field after receiving his mortal injury. Anyone know how the poor guy involved in the collision, Sam English got on with his career afterwards? It must have been a terrible burden to carry with you.

Think he moved down south and ended up retiring prematurely.

Charlie Nicholas as assistant referee? That, and the throw-in that never was in 1989, strike me as evidence that we're paranoid about biased officials.

The only people I have ever heard making anything more out of it than the tragic accident it was, whether through alleging it was deliberate, or alleging that others claimed it was deliberate, were huns.

Seem to recall recent FF-instigated Sam English benefit/charity events where the banner emblazoning the scheduled dinners etc pointedly included a picture not of English with the ball at his feet, or celebrating a goal, but rather the knee that collided with Thompson. :nono:

That's a very good, well balanced article.

I agree Sam English was another victim that day, having to carry that horrible memory of an accidental collision for the rest of his life.
Whether the story that is told in some other articles, that it ruined his career due to him having to carry the burden is accurate or overplayed down the years, i'm not sure.

For me he seems to have risen above it and carried on playing football as he had every right to do, finishing the season of the tragedy on 53 goals which remained a record for evermore for Rangers.
As the article says he won a League title the following year and won 2 international caps.
The following year his career reached another high when he got a decent move to Liverpool where he kept up his record of scoring frequently in his first season, finishing on 21 goals.

Similar to his Rangers spell when he had a very good first season and his second wasn't as good, the same happened at Liverpool.
Therefore it was a full four years after the tragedy before his career went downhill.

To blame the downwards spiral of his career on that tragic day in September 1931 alone, i'm not sure, especially as that season was his best ever, in the year he would have been most affected by the tragedy.

I've found an excellent article in the Celtic Wiki regards the Shawfield incident.
