I remember walking back down the Gallowgate after old firm games at Parkhead, towards the town when I was young, and getting near Glasgow Cross and hearing the roar go up... "here they come!"

Cue everyone with weans shielding them from flying bottles, and almost everyone else running full pelt into the hun...
Only went through the town a few times after OF games and it got scary at Glasgow Cross when the Gallowgate met at London Road.

It was.

The polis never gave a feck. I think as soon as you were out of old D Division's patch you could launch mortar missiles at each other as far as they were concerned.

The running battles through the Barras were mental too.

You were at the Dryborough CF as well, starting to see a connection :rocker:
That's right - bhoy could I run like feck away from trouble in those days
At the time I just thought it was a sense of relief after what was a promising year had gone sour.. losing to Real and throwing the league away. We left once the first guys went onto the pitch... we thought they'd be no chance of a lap of honour with the cup so headed home. When I got home my dad was sayin "that was terrible today" I replied "aye, should have been 2 or 3!" oblivious of the carnage... he's lookin at me like I'm mad... "were you at the game" "the riot!!"... More worring at the game was the collapse of some of wooden slats on the terrace when we scored... a lot of guys around us fell and it was quite scarey :(

Stadium five minutes from my dad's house, it is the home of junior football in Limerick and was reopened that night with new floodlights. Big crowd of nearly 9,000 people attended, including myself.

Definitely Gentile - Never made a bad tackle in his career.
Always remember watching a world cup game from Rome in 1976 between Italy and England.

Causio, Bettega and Antognoni ripped the English apart but Italy had Gentile and a guy called Romeo Bennetti who made Greig and Forsyth from the deid huns look like choirboys. They were assassins.

Maybe Boretim was there that day.
definitely, was Gentile, a gentlemen killer of italian full backs style. ask to Zico or Maradona at World Cup 82 in spain and many other strikers all aorund the continent. and n. 4 on that day in Rome was Romeo Benetti, a piece of rock on italian midfield. he was as Gentile on defense, no fear and no the last to eat the ankles of everyone..... different footie. they could have a career with Atletico M. or Rapid .... but they ever escaped from ban, as they played for Juvenuts and Ac Milan.
that day in Rome we won and we had our pass to WC in Argentina, really fear of Ally McLeod 's Army ... :rocker:

Is this from one of the games when we beat them 3 times in a fortnight.
KD fixing his laces on the penalty spot is a favourite memory.

Picture from the 'Scotsman' newspaper of rioting at the 1909. It's like a still from a b/w western with no indians.

Interesting report of the how the rioting developed and played out.
