Yes they did paint the barrier green but the Celtic end had completely changed by then

Loved the old stadium
But that fence between the Jungle and Celtic end was a pain in the arse.
When was that fence put in?

I don't really remember noticing it before I started going to the terracing with my mates, which was around 1985.

I'm thinking that it must have been around 1984. Maybe '83? :ponder:

Aye it was a pain that fence, i remember going in the Janefield entrance before that fence but cant remember when it was put up. Must be early 80s I also remeber the old celtic end before the new improved larger roof :)

Did they not move the fence along form the Jungle to that sit in the early 80s :ponder:

Naw, the Celtic end was re-covered in 1986. I remember because it was still closed during a pre-season friendly against Aston Villa because the rangers end that day was pretty full as a result.

I remember Neale Cooper of ex-Aberdeen and soon to be huns fame, getting dogs (or should that be sheep's abuse!) from the jungle that day. Score was 1-0 with McClair scoring early in the second half I think.

The Celtic end was murder on wet days before the roof was extended. I must have only been in it like that for about a year before the renovations, and my memory is hazy apart from the wet.

On the wiki and on the web there are arial pictures of Parkhead from between 1981 and 1984 with no fence, hence why I think it had to be 1984.

I remember it being there when the polis did the charge of the light brigade down Janefield Street, which I think was 1985? Maybe someone can confirm or correct that :ponder:

I generally went into the front stand with my uncles and cousins until about 1985. As it happens I believe the Janefield Street riot was my first Old Firm game without the chaperoning of relatives and family friends.

When it all went breests up, I absolutely shat myself and assumed that all Old Firms were like that after the game.

I seriously considered asking my uncle to go back round to the stand with him next time.

Janfield Street charge i was in that, i jumped on the wall that came down.

I remember no fence between the C.E. and Jungle, and i remember the fence down the front of the Jungle and at the hun end, the fence down the bottom of the Jungle was crap cos you could see nothing.

The whole atmosphere at that game was utterly poisonous.

Basically from memory I think we had to win to stay in the league race. It was one of those days that was totally rigged. If you were there you'll remember. Penalty in the first minute or so. Aitken scored. Ordered to retake for some unknown reason. Promptly saved.

Result Looking really unlikely then Mcinally scored in what I think might have been his debut? :ponder:

Looking good. Cooper (spit!) sent off for leathering Grant. Followed by Ally Dawson.

huns awarded penalty. McCoist scores. huns rejoice in full flow, knowing that we can no longer win the league. Cavorting in their own urine and vomit like a billy boys version of the raft of the medusa.

hun players celebrating like they have won the league themselves. Getting it right up all of us.

Sombre exit onto Janefield Street into the charge of the light brigade. Where we're the hun fans we were supposedly scrapping with? :ponder:

Exiting the stadium by the opposite, South East corner, that's where. Nowhere to be seen. Nothing to see here.

Complete chaos, walls collapsing, weans screaming.

Also I think it was a slightly surreal atmosphere that day because despite it being in May, the weather was really overcast and gloomy. Just a day with no sense of optimism in any respect. A weary day, made wearier by the result.

Also seem to recall an unusually low attendance for an old firm. Atmosphere was oddly flat prior and after, and as I said was utterly malign during.

All in all, one of my less well remembered old firm games.

Nope, it was because there was a Taylor Report related deadline of 1994 for top division clubs to have all-seater stadiums. After the pie-in-the-sky Cambuslang scheme started to come unstuck, the old board was resorting to just installing seats in the existing terraces. If they had kept control beyond February 1994 they would have had to either a) put seats in the ends or b) apply for an extension to the deadline. Some English clubs (including Newcastle) got one, but none in Scotland (probably because the huns didn't need one).

The ground capacity would probably have been around 35,000 if they had ended up doing that.

Celtic End barrier painted green in this pic from 1966.

Also, given that the front of the CE is mobbed, then I would suggest that this is a 2-0 Celtic win over hunnery on September 17, 1966.

Celtic team: Simpson, Gemmell (how frail he looks now :( ) O'Neill, Murdoch, McNeill, Clark, Johnstone, Lennox, McBride (1), Auld (1) Hughes.
