Was squashed many a time in among this mob when i was a wee bhoy,

Brilliant pic.

I was trying to tell a younger fan that there used to be houses out there, which is now wasteland.

Thanks.

Am I right in thinking this is where the police horses came charging down into the Celtic fans in Janefield Street in the early 80s, causing that fence in front of the flats (in the right of the picture) to collapse?

Is the guy in the background Tully Senior??
I am a new member of this Forum but have been reading it for quite a while. I have to say that, being of a certain vintage, I am loving looking at all these old images. Well done to the person who started this topic.

The guy in the background to this photograph is not Tully Senior but is in fact a man called John Murphy who, amongst other jobs at Celtic Park, was the person who used to read out the teams over the tannoy system before each game. I think that as his full-time job, he might have been a teacher at Holyrood School in Glasgow - though I'm not 100% certain about this.
Well in SS! I've heard many stories about John Murphy down the years but that's the first photo I've seen. I think he was responsible for a number of Holyrood pupils getting through the Celtic Park door down the years - can anyone confirm?

Steady - the '82 pinstripe away had to last me through most of the years at secondary! Don't ever remember being fast enough to catch you to get a kick in either TS :brickwall:

John was quite an influential figure so I suspect that you are right. He was also in charge of the ballboys, deciding which 8 would be on the park for each game. No sitting on little seats in those days. You had to work for your 2/6 per game!

Mike Jackson, from 'Talking With Celtic' with Eugene MacBride:

"Mr John Murphy was instrumental in most of the boys at Holyrood School in those days going to Celtic like me, Crerand, Kurila, Gallagher. I think he probably acted as an unpaid scout. And for years he did all the public address work at Parkhead."
