Do any of you have good pictures of Billy McPhail?

A great player for us in a short career, but what a record. We've only got two pictures of the guy in the wiki, and they're not the best...

If anyone can help, that would be great....

He scored 21 goals in 20 games in the League Cup and was pivotal in the 2-in-a-row league cup wins of 56 & 57....

I would take a stab at the Dundee player being Ian Ure, who later signed for Spurs with Alan Gilzean

Ian Ure, who later bumped into Craig Brewster's Maw :suspect:
Brilliant find. Was Dens Park that spacious behind the goal? Take it that's the end furthest from Tannadice then?

When did we wear striped shorts??
Think this is John Clark when he played for Morton. The colour is obviously meant to be blue and has been affected in some way.

A piece I found on the infamous referee Craigmyle :nono: , although by the description of the incidents, the Celts were far from innocent

The call came from Pittodrie as a referee was required for the Dons match against Morton. Refereeing an Aberdeen game in front of 25,000 supporters was a tough task but Craigmyle showed enough quality to suggest that he was destined for a lengthy career as a referee. In December 1921 Peter sent off his first player; Celtic's Joe Cassidy after he threw a punch at Falkirk defender Tommy Scott; a blow that effectively knocked him out and split his jaw. Ten days later his first Old Firm match beckoned and it was after that Celtic sending off that Craigmyle was asked whether it would be better if he called off from taking the Rangers game. Typically Peter refused and at the age of 23 he took charge of his first Celtic v Rangers match.

In 1924 Peter Craigmyle took charge of his first full international, at Liverpool where England played Ireland. In 1931 he took charge of the Scottish Cup final between Celtic and Motherwell. Back then it was perhapsMotherwell's greatest ever side and they were expected to beat Celtic with ease. A classic match ensued with Craigmyle recalling that Motherwell were leading 2-0 with ten minutes to go only to be pegged back a late Celtic rally and a tragic mistake from the Fir Park keeper. Celtic went on to win the replay 4-2.

Incredible as it may seem but back in the days when players were rarely ordered off, in his 31 years as a referee, Craigmyle only ever sent off two players. The first Celtic incident was followed by an incident in the New Years Day Old Firm derby at Ibrox in 1935. With 15 minutes left in an unremarkable game, it was Celtic's Peter McConagle who incurred his wrath. After charging at Rangers Jimmy Smith he was cautioned by Craigmyle. Minutes later the Celt pole axed Rangers Bob McPhail who fell to the ground. Incredibly the Celtic player picked up the ball and launched it at the stricken Rangers player on the ground. Craigmyle actually took the Celtic player by the arm and escorted him from the field after the incident as he was sent off.

Is the guy in the background Tully Senior??
I am a new member of this Forum but have been reading it for quite a while. I have to say that, being of a certain vintage, I am loving looking at all these old images. Well done to the person who started this topic.

The guy in the background to this photograph is not Tully Senior but is in fact a man called John Murphy who, amongst other jobs at Celtic Park, was the person who used to read out the teams over the tannoy system before each game. I think that as his full-time job, he might have been a teacher at Holyrood School in Glasgow - though I'm not 100% certain about this.

Ex hun Billy Thomson in goal :cuckoo:
We ran riot for last 4 games of the group, including pumping hibs

JBC, only one I have saved is the 3rd goal in the 7-1 game

But Im sure this is on the 7-1 page in the wiki

Great shot of the T-ball used back then aswell, which later in life was blamed for Billy's illness. After retiring, he developed a neurodegenerative disease, which he believed to be a result of brain damage acquired from heading the heavy balls of the time.

Definetely looks like the Jungle 1966, not much to go on GR not even a hoopsc top in sight, looks like Dunfermline.

Think Celtic are wearing all Green Strip with big Tam Gemmell lying on the ground with Faither watching the ball go in his ain net :suspect:
68 scottish cup? Only domestic cup final we didn't reach during the nine in a row.

Not seen this one of CP before.
1960, great ariel of the housing that stood on the first CP.

:rocker:
So the Rangers End used to be uncovered. Then they put a roof up which was longer than the one at the Celtic End?!? Used to be amazed that the away fans at Celtic Park were completely sheltered from the elements while those in the front half of the main Celtic terracing weren't :cuckoo: Gotta love those ole Custodians of ours!
Exactly CH. The half roof went up in 57 with the excuse that because of the mining shafts underneath they couldn't do a bigger roof.
Hun end roof went up in 67.

I remember those old mining shaft stories but as CP was originally a disused brickfield i wonder where the mine shaft stories would have originated?
Any experts on?
When the stadium was rebuilt under The Bunnet they had to pour concrete into old
mine workings they discovered.
