Someone posted this pic earlier in the thread, cannae be annoyed looking back :nono:

although this appears to be of our Celtic Park its not, there have never have been speedway at CP but there was one over the railway line (celtic end) at Dalserf Street Barrowfield, postal address of Porter Street Camlachie and was owned by a Mr Nelson and the venue was better known as the Glasgow Nelson

Edit} to let JBC know to remove the nice piece he did on the wiki

Sorry FLC, but this guy on the bike is crashing inside the Celtic End, not behind it

I done a bit of research on the Celtic Park Speedway for another site, the first meeting and 2 or 3 afterwards were held inside Celtic Park (stadium), riders were not happy with the surface and the venue was changed to (here is the mix up) Celtic Park!! Yes there was a track nearby which in Speedway circles carried the name Celtic Park, but the as the photo above shows, speedway did take place inside the stadium
Yes no doubt that pic of Speedway is our Celtic Park GR

Was in the mitch looking up Parkhead today and was handed the Jim Henry book that Andy67 quoted, i only browsed it and took a few notes, should have researched online but decided to post my comments on KDS, that will teach me, i cannot argue with the Celtic Historians but the more i read about Celtic Park Speedway the more confused i get, 2 Stadiums in Janefield Street and both holding Speedway Racing round about the same time, looks like Celtic jumped on the bandwagon and held 12 speedway meetings in a short space of time although i find this quote very confusing,

Quote:

"The night before Celtic Park opened on 27 April, the event winners were 350cc George Wilson, 600cc Peter James, 250cc Tom Shearer while James Edward retained his Unlimited crown and Peter Coia surrendered his sidecar mantle. The report of this meeting is quite sketchy but a certain Norrie Isbister appears in the published results taking second place in the heats of the 350cc."

Looks like they called the 2 stadiums Celtic Park? i have copied a few pics of programmes from the Glasgow Nelson meeting and according to the dates they were the first to hold speedyway in Scotland, the source for this info is: http://urbanglasgow.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=2308&start=0

Below is some information i found on the t"internet about speedway at our Celtic Park: apologise to JBC and Glasgow Road

The stadium at one time featured a concrete track round the playing pitch used for various events including a demonstration of motorcycle time trials in 1910. In 1928 the stadium staged 12 speedway meetings between the end of April and late July. A demonstration event was staged at half time in an Old Firm derby in May. The promotion, Dirt Track Speedways, staged the first charity speedway meeting in the UK raising funds for a new St Andrews Ambulance HQ.

PS there was another ground right beside CP which is seen in ariel maps from the 20s i think it is. It was where there became a traingular patterned set of houses.
Think the ground was described as a "trotting ground".

The first Glasgow speedway was held at the Nelson/Olympic Stadium, the first 'professional' speedway was held at Celtic Park

It always amazed me that the locals would leave their cars parked on Janefield St after games.they were the main reason the crushing was so bad.
