Stein retired with injury in 56 did he not, so it will be from late 56 onwards

May even be 58/59 season as there is no Sean Fallon or Bobby Collins

Also Willie Fernie is pictured, he left in 1958 and returned in 1960 after a two year spell at Middlesbrough

Think top left is Mike Haughney and he quit football and emigrated to America in 1957.

Charles Patrick does look a bit older then again he might have been out on the lash the night before. ;)

It has to be before 1957-58 as Mike Haughney had gone by then and been replaced by John Donnelly.

I reckon it's the 1956-57 season.

I can't figure out what match it would be though. :ponder:

John Jack played every match in every competition in 1956-57 bar one, i.e. the very last league match. As he isn't in that photo it could only be that match but Alec Byrne and Bobby Collins played in it yet they're not in the photo.

It may be back to the drawing board.

One thing certain though, CB67 is right that Haughney had gone before 1957-58 so it has to be before then.

Are you sure?

I was at that game and I'm as certain as it's possible to be
that we didn't wear this strip.

You are corect in what you say about the Hibs score; Jock Stein
was their manager that day and the next time he was in charge
that season in the 'Scottish', it was as our manager beating Motherwell
in the 'semi' after a replay.

Any light, anybody?

Soubirous - Old evening times report from that day shows a pic of Celtic in the shamrock strip.

Was wrong about the scoring order; Celtic went 3-1 ahead. That game was my first foray into the Jungle.

Would have to know who all the players are before we know what game it was,

think it would have been the 1956/57 season with the team lining up as:

Haughney, Meechan, Beattie, ?, Evans, Peacock
Higgins, ?, Mochan, Fernie, Tully.

You amaze me; I stand corrected, thanks.

Funny how a game so significant as that
remains in the memory, but something as
major as the strip the team wore doesn't stick.

Looks like his ears

did think of him but that would take us into the 1957-58 year and that
would rule out Haughney although all the others did play that year

I'm new. Be gentle.
I think the two missing players are John Jack and Vince Ryan. I think Jack is in the back row.
If the photo is 56-57 then Jack has to be in the photo as he played in every league game bar one and also Beattie missed the same game but he is in the photo.
Vince Ryan played 12 games as a replacement for Bobby Collins (who is not in the photo)
With Frank Meechan in the photo, he only played 6 league games that season and if that is the enclosure at Celtic Park then Celtic only played one home game with Meechan in the team.
I think Sammy Wilson signed in the summer of 1957.

So I think the photo was taken at the game v Dunfermline Athletic on 15 December 1956.

Hope this helps.

Not many pics going about of them two but have found a team pic, must say it looks nothing like them but ties in with the Dunfermline game as that was the line up, was not a good period in Celtics history so names dont just jump out at you, although the 7-1 team that beat the huns does and will never be forgotten. :worthy:

Well done in getting the other names as i had gave up
