Nice "car coat".
Car Coats ruled. If your Dad didn't have a car coat he wasn't really your Dad. :blueoyster2: My Dad had 3 car coats on the go from 68 - 74 and he couldn't even be arsed learning to drive. Harold Wilson, Big Jock - they all had 'em. Car coats were the dogs! :rocker:

Looks like the handsome John McPhail :blueoyster2:
Lived opposite my gran for some years, and had a very
beautiful daughter that I can clearly visualise
May have had another daughter but I cannot bring her
face to mind :(
His sister's boy was in my class at school; John's nephew represented UK in the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest, losing to Celine Dion by a point.

That picture shows the extension that was carried out on the main stand in the
early 1970s. The seating behind Big Slim Latchfords heid is the extended part - this
was done to create an additional exit for the front stand, which only had one exit
either side of the tunnel when it was still the old terraced enclosure.

That's the first time i've heard the Main Stand seating was extended in 71 when the old roof was taken off and the new one put on.
I take it this extension went all the way down to the front but in what way did it create an additional exit for the front part?

I'm not familiar with sitting in the Main Stand but are the exits behind the seats at each end now and also nearer the tunnel?

It created an extra exit right at either end of the stand.

I believe the picture below is the begining of the work.

As I said, the exits for the old enclosure were in the middle either side of the tunnel.

The "new" exits are at the ends of the main stand.

Again, heres the width of the original stand compared to the extended part (covered by black corrugated
sheeting - no expense spared...)

The old stand had sides perpendicular to the pitch; my guess is that the board saw a chance in the design to get a few extra bob at the gate by adding a couple of hundred seats. Any benefit to front stand regulars was entirely fortuitous: when did that lot ever consider the fans?
