Derek Mills is his name, just remembered. Went to see that reserve side regularly.

I was there when Celtic won the first youth cup in 1984 when we beat the huns 2-0 at Parkhead.

McAlinden and Fraser scored the goals I think.

Saw a few youth/reserve games from that era and Dougie McGuire was a great player but didn't make it. I rated him better than Joe Miller.

Agree with you on Dougie McGuire. Only made a couple of first team appearences. I am sure he came on as a sub in an away European game. Can't remember who against. will come back to me at some point. Was at that final as well.

Borussia Dortmund over there in 87. The subs bench was something like Latchford, McGuire, Archdeacon, Shephard and Mathie !

By the way if it wasn't for a 20 foot fence then we would have been kicked out of Europe for years. A number of Dortmund fans invaded the park and ran to the Celtic end and had it not been for the fence we would been right back at them.

Plenty of cover for defence on that bench.

 St Anthony, thanks for the Dumbarton answer  .

The player in the youth team photo,is it not Gordon Mills, rather than Derek.Gordon Mills ran riot in the Juniors scoring for fun*,particularly with Auchenleck, looks like him. Also rememeber seeing Schiavone playing Junior with Glenrothes,Celtic had farmed him out.

*couldnt score in four attempts against the Pace

Dougie McGuire was a good player when on the ball - We ended up getting £40k for him - His auld fella had a seat in the lower Main Stand for decades but rapped it in wgs last season.

Dougie ended up eventually on the Ayrshire Junior circuit and Managed Ardeer Thistle - He was doing well with them but resigned in March 2011 - Think he had a bust up with a ref - Ayrshire Junior refs. :suspect:

The other guy is John McAlindon a Celtic forward of the late 1950's who went on to become the Celtic Electrician/Maintenance Man for the best part of 40 years.

Snudge,
Delighted for you on the find. I posted that myself although as CaltonBhoy said Four Leaf Clover had maybe posted it already. I got it from my dad's colllection of cuttings. It was in a magazine in July 67. It was a feature on Lisbon and the history of Celtic. A ceackin photo. Enjoy the brandy.

Absolutely phenomenal stuff.

More poignant still as i have just recently been working with the Celtic foundation and was mentioning that my Granda's yard - RD's as you know, had the contracts for the ground. Was worried that the Coach i was working with was giving it lip service as someone else with a tenuous link to the Club or trying to impress.

My Dad used to regale us with tales of sitting on Charlie Tully's knee and later mixing with the Lions, thought the tale that it would usually have been my Granda driving the truck but gave it to his mate (perhaps was indisposed as it was the 26th) was one of those family tales but going by the comments earlier that could well be right. Had no idea who the mate was either. Fantastic.

Can't thank you and all the other posters enough for putting this stuff up.

Hail Hail.

Snudge, the two fellas were working on The Jungle extension, the track was shortened in front of the Old Hayshed thus extending The Jungle closer to the pitch
