And another one for Yogi-enthusiasts - Willie Callaghan (Tommy's brother; they both played in the same Dunfermline side before TC signed for Celtic) is defending the post.

Think it's probably the January 1970 game.

Since we're on the topic of refs, here's Tiny Wharton from when things got a bit fighty around 1969-70.

Could be the SC quarter-final at CP in 1970; Huns went ahead in 5 minutes through a Jim Craig o.g. We won 3-1, the third being a 25-yard screamer from Davie Hay. I'm almost certain there was a player sent off in that game; can't remember if it was one of ours or a Hun.

Here's one of a player allegedly called MacKerrell, although no-one of that name ever played for Celtic.

I assume it's Tommy Mackle instead, hitting the post in his debut in a defeat* by Raith Rovers. First game of the season, August 1959.

*that's why we used to finish mid-table.

Tommy Mackle actually scored twice in that debut in a 2-1 win...

Wahey! It's a debate about a 50-year-old league cup game.

I don't know personally, I certainly wasn't there, but the Celtic Wiki - http://www.thecelticwiki.com/page/1959 and soccer statto http://www.statto.com/football/stats/scotland/league-cup/1959-1960 certainly suggest that Raith Rovers won, as well as the book that got the boy's name wrong.

my error, he scored once and we lost 2-1.....

it was his debut game 8 Aug 1959, away match.

I joined here just to participate in this thread and some others.

I am sure you're right that is the 1970 SCQF, Celtic winning 3-1 with Hay scoring into the Celtic End, right in line with me. I think Willie Johnston may have been sent off.
