The infamous 'orange socks' attempt at mind games by Revie.
Leeds had a bright orange away kit that year, we were first to wear those socks  afterwards Leeds wore the orange kit once v Derby I'm sure and got beat, the fans blamed the strip and demanded it never to be worn again, some fans calling it the 'Celtic strip'.

Revie on the night of the game thought he was playing funny buggers by offering us the orange socks, Big Jock in return said the travelling fans would love them as the strip would resemble the Irish Tricolour :rocker: Couldn't beat the Big Man at mind games.
i seem to remember that they offered us blue socks first, but were told to bolt ........ ;)

Found a few more pics around the place.

This one is a pic from Parkhead 1976. How many of us on here stood on this wee bit of terracing in between the Celtic end and the Jungle ? Tricolours out the windaes as well !
Great to see the views outside from both ends of the jungle, this one is also from 1976 and was posted much earlier in the thread, IMO its one of the most important images on here as it shows exactly where we played our very first match, not forgetting the ghost of the wee girl in the graveyard :o

Correct, here is a few quotes from the Leeds side.

Quote:

There was a conundrum for Celtic before the kick-off. As both teams normally wore white stockings the away team would have to change. Though Celtic claimed they thought Leeds had agreed to do so. This meant that Celtic did not have an adequate replacement with them, but never fear Leeds stepped in to offer them an alternative. They could wear blue or red.

“Well wear the red stockings,” said Jock Stein, sensing a little bit of gamesmanship from Leeds. “Under their floodlights, they”ll show up more orange than red and our supporters will think that we?re wearing the colours of the Irish tricolour. That’ll please them.”

Quote:

Although Big Jock is quoted as saying 'red', leeds change strip of the time was all tangerine, a strip disliked by their own support, infact Celtic wore the socks before any Leeds players did as the club were still too apprehensive to send the side out in that strip. They only wore the all tangerine strip in one game.

Quote:

Allan Clarke Says:

I do remember the socks changing episode at the Celtic game.

We were getting changed and someone came in with some Blue Socks and said we would have to wear them as there was a clash. The Gaffer said why can’t that lot change and told us to carry on getting ready.

When we went out Celtic had some Orange socks on, they obviously didn’t fancy the blue ones.

Leeds Kits Site Says:

No one remembers the orange kit but in the European cup semi final versus Celtic in April 1970 we did lend Celtic orange socks to avoid a clash.Revie offered a choice of blue or orange which is not really a choice for them? Some versions state that he offered red or blue but orange were the ones worn.

Was at the back of the Celtic end at Hampden that day. Remember the teams emerging from the tunnel and the momentary confusion among the support who thought we were at the wrong game! Not surprising as Morton had about a dozen different strips in those days, including ones with orange socks. I'll post an interesting wee picture regarding Morton's strips in the near future (technological ability notwithstanding).

The phrase utility player is usually used to mean a jack of all trades, master of none. Bobby was a utility player in the sense that he could do it all.
