Naw there always was seats in the dug oot.

Look at the front section of the Main Stand.

The Main Stand in the big pic showing the roof going up in the Celtic End in 57 was built in 1929.
In 1971 the front section was seated and the roof replaced and new seats installed.

The Main Stand built in 1929 replaced the Grant Stand which stood from 1898 to 1929.
The Grant Stand was a 2 tier stand with the same terracing in front of it that remained when the Main Stand was built in 1929.

That same terracing (now seated) has been there almost the whole time span of the ground which was built in 1892.

:ponder:

Yep the Huns end does look bigger than the Celtic End from this pic in the early 50s.
This supports the view that the Celtic End terracing was extended when the first roof went up in 57 as the pic seems to suggest.

Looking at the ariel pic again the boundary wall is behind the back of the terracing not adjoined to it. It would seem the roof would have went up from the boundary wall allowing for the terracing to be extended.

Makes sense. Strange thing is i've never seen it recorded anywhere or heard anyone speak about the terracing being extended when the roof went up.

Great photos!

I've got a wee collection of these old press photos myself, most of which I have uploaded to our Wiki site.

Two of the most famous referees of the era in that picture. :suspect: :nono:

I so wish we had signed one of them for his football ability.

Can you tell me what match this is from? I've got a photo taken from a different angle that looks very similar to this (the position of goalkeeper in particular) but I've never been able to discover what game it is from as there is no description on the back other than a Sunday Post press stamp.

I'll post the photo later when I get home. I think you may have inadvertedly solved this mystery for me!

Good work, although it has to be a game were Harry Hood played in as he is in the background on the wing in my photo.
