I can recall Gemmel and Murdoch having shots of being captain ,
the vice captain thing is a good question I think most of
us ( old yins ) would remember that tag getting banded about
JC would have fitted that bill but I can only suggest you have a
look through the wiki .

Wee question, always thought John Clark was vice captain to Cesar, can anyone confirm this. Moch, G/R, Caltonbhoy.

Off topic I know.
Not sure tbh - I know Murdoch was the Captain in the League Cup Final we lost to Thistle.

Gemmell I think also did it and I know he went in goals if Simpson/TOHG got injured.

Leave that one to The Moch - I think in truth there were that many leaders and born winners they knew what they were doing but I am not sure who would have gone up for the toss of the coin etc.

I asked my dad, he's almost 79 and thinks that there wasn't a vice captain as he remembers both Murdoch and Gemmell captaining the team in Billy's absence and though he's not 100% sure he thinks that each were playing when the other captained the side

Big Billy missed a few games in January 66 including a 5-1
pumping of the Huns and 3-1 win over Kiev , wiki says Cushley
replaced him but no mention of who captained .

think it was Colin Todd :ph43r:

I don't know for sure , but would say no. Billy was The Captain and if he wasn't playing , someone just got the job of tossing the coin .

Certain Lisbon Lions agree with your Dad - My Dad did too.

At least three Lisbon Lions think that game was more important to Celtic than winning in Lisbon.

You 100% sticking your reputation on Colin Todd? :ph43r:

I agree with your take on the Captaincy in Billy's absence I don't think they had one as they were their own leaders - The one that does come to mind is the Thistle Final as Jock loved Bobby Murdoch and I think he wanted Bobby to lift the Cup - That plan didn't work out too well!!! :(

Truth was the Thistle game was just one of those games were things go against you and the other team deserve to win on the day - Less than a month later we went to Firhill and battered Thistle 5-1 and I believe that was Celtic letting them off lightly from what my Dad told me.
