Paul Wilson and Jinky playing for Blantyre Celtic 1980

Posted Image
I remember Blantyre Celtic playing Dunipace around about September 1980.Wilson played the 90,Jinky was an unused sub. Both were on a cut of the gate money with Blantyre pulling in 1000+ gates. The wee man only lasted a couple of week,Wilson played against the Pace again the following season, this time the side included former rangers player Johnny Hamilton.I found Wilsons case a wee bit more sad,I make it he was still only 29 when I saw him and only two years after playing in the hoops.A very underrated playe.
Snowy, you just beat me to it.

Around same period Blantyre played St Anthony's in Govan and drew a crazy crowd to the old Moore Park ground (fondly remembered by older Celts for the old social club in Helen Street before Rangers games).

Jinky was tthe expected bag of tricks but Wilson was the star turn. Took a ball 30 yards with his back to goal, turned the defender and blasted a shot into the top corner. Pure class.

As you say he wasn't even 30 yet and should still have been in the SPL :(
There was an article in the Scotsman or The Herald years ago in which he said he never dealt with the death of his Mother well and had no real interest in football after that despite the fact he was still playing and eventually he just decided to rap it completely - He was also playing with cortisone injections every game iirc.

It was as posted a sad ending for a very good Celtic player.

Used to love watching Paul Wilson, he could be brilliant on his day

Remember him getting two goals in the Cup Final of 1975, and two against the Deadco in a Glasgow Cup Final, obviously both at Hampden

Add in a last minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw against Deadco at Celtic Park in 1976, and generally my memories of him are very good

Used to get some shameful abuse from the huns

What match was this?

Any specific reason for the trouble in the stands?
Probably gang related. Cumbie V Shamrock. A regular occurence in those days. A crop circle would appear in the crowd and the polis would move into the gap and lift some of the protagonists. Hence the need for crash helmets for the kids at front, me included. As the song goes "screwtaps keep falling on my head."

Best thread on here, thanks again to all the folk who go to the trouble to post the pictures.

Particularly like the fact that aw the old players look like guys you'd want to go for a pint with, unlike most current players.

My first real memory of Paul was in a cracking 4-2 win against Hibs in Edinburgh in the 1970s. I was just a kid and this was my first away game. Wilson was brilliant that day (as was Alan Gordon of Hibs) with both scoring right in front of me (I was standing down at the billboards, dodging assholes throwing empty skol cans)
