My dad passed away over the weekend, he was just short of 83. Unlike probably most of you, I was a Celt before him, the trainer of our football team who happened to be our parish priest was Celtic daft and had all the kids turned onto Celtic so it took me a while to get him on board as he just liked watching any football game. He only came over three times with me to CP, he wouldn't fly but it was just as well as he never really understood the tensions that exist between Celtic and some of the other clubs. He would talk to anybody which led to some nervous encounters where I thought he would get me lynched, I was the one wearing the colours. Being thrown out of my own house when Celtic were on the box the routine I had was to arrive at my dads with a fish & chip and a six pack of guinness for him and we watched the match together. It will seem very strange next season, I won't know what to do with myself. Sorry for hijacking the thread, I felt the need to put a few words down and this seemed like the right place to do it.
Sorry to hear about your loss. My Dad passed away 8 years ago and I still find it hard to get over some days (don't want to make you sad, but missing someone shows how much they meant to you). My brother and me were brought up going to the Jungle and standing next to the floodlight legs, so my Dad could go into the Jungle proper with his mates, and then get us on the way out. Next stop was sitting outside the pub with a bunch of other kids eating our bag of crisps and the odd bottle of coke or whatever else. After they had a few pints picked us back up from outside with the rest of the kids then back home on the train to Johnstone (I lived up the Castle if anyone knows Johnstone well). My Dad was from Maryhill, and played with Maryhill Harp the same time as Bertie Auld. My uncle was one of the coach’s for the Harp and always tells the story how the Celtic Scouts were coming along one specific game to watch my Dad, but he didn't show for the game and they picked Bertie instead. My Dad would always end up going to the toilet every time my Uncle started the story. My Uncle didn't have a good word to say about Bertie, but I think it was really more out of frustration because he said my Dad was a far better player than Bertie, but did admit he was a lazy bugger who would miss training and the odd game. Sorry to take over your post, but just wanted to say that it’s those special memories of your Dad that will never be forgotten.
If your dad was on a par with Bertie, we missed out on a cracking player I appreciate your post and sorry for your loss. Elvis
Thanks for that.
My Uncle would never shut up about him being better than Bertie, and I gave up listening as I thought it was just sour grapes. My Mum & another Uncle said my Dad was really good, and on his day better than Bertie, but being such a lazy bugger probably wouldn't have put the effort in if he had been given the chance.
Nice to have memories to speak about though

My uncle was at that game.Jackie Chalrton's testimonial and it was days after both teams had lost cup finals and Celtic put on a super display winning I think4-3.If anyone on here was at the game I would be interested in their thoughts of the game. The papers though criticised Celtic fans quite rightly for disgracefully booing the national anthem I was there - To be honest I cannot remember national anthem being played. The game was a good one. Had a wee edge to it despite being a testimonial. Celtic deserved the win. After the game the Leeds Utd fans ran on the park towards the Celtic end. They then started chanting "Celtic" and the Celtic fans responded with "Leeds Utd". On the way back to the buses we went through streets of terraced houses. The Leeds fans were at their doors inviting the Celtic fans in for a drink. There were a few women on our bus and they were glad to get a cup of tea and use of a toilet! In the bus park Leeds fans came on the bus and gave us programmes and other Leeds Utd souvenirs. Then the long journey back up the road in time to go straight to work the next morning. Best Testimonial though was Bobby Moore's - A real game! But that's a story for another day

I was at the Jackie Charlton Testimonial 5th May 1973 - it was a great occasion and also a great game. Dalglish was superb as was Allan Clarke for Leeds - saw him in a different light after that evening. Swapped a recently bought new Celtic scarf for a wee bog standard Leeds woollen one - because the young lads Dad asked me if I would be good enough. Must have been drunker then I thought. Remember getting off the bus early the next morning, just in time to nick a pint of milk and some morning rolls from the door of the (still closed) shop.

Losing to the Huns at new year ,even though it only put them on level points with us,knocked the stuffing out of us.It was the first time I had known the Huns to win the league and I still carry the psychology scars to this day.
