I always get the urge to try to date these photos.

I'd say this one between 1976-1981...

I'm sure I saw this pic on a website which dated it as Celtic 2-2 Rangers 4/9/76.

That is Tiny Wharton (Tom) who was bulky as you can see, but also 6 ft 4in tall. He played over 3 decades starting in the 50's.
Not sure how old he was when he refereed his last game but he was far older than the ref's today.

I saw him in action and he also seemed to command the game. It was a bit different then, though.

I have seen pre war photo's of some goalie's who had a similar physique. There was one guy who was far bulkier, but of a similar height, playing around the time of the First World War for some English side. He was quite famous, as well.

Some of our present ref's could quite easily wear a blazer, given the amount of use they are, as it would not impact on their performance.

The goalkeeper was William 'Fatty' Foulkes who played mainly for Sheffield United around the turn of the last century, he was apparently 6'4" and 25 stone.

With regard to a Tiny Wharton my old fellow used to call him up and down dale, mainly about his size, the colour of his nose and his illegitimacy. I was only a child so I don't know how deserved it was. The hand shake photo with The Bastard didnt help.

Read in The Seven penny gate book that Tiny Wharton grew up beside Celtic Park realising at an early age he wasn't cut out to play football took up refereeing Street games between Williamson St and Silverdale St. :o
