that's Hamilton Accies away strip, so that would put it 88-89 as they were only in that one season when we had our centenary kit.

Think the defender is Willie ? (ex Hibs) and keeper is Alan ?

The only game we had in that period is a 7-2 home win in Aug 88 when McAvennie got 2.

You forget McAvennie's Celtic career was not that long - not even 2 seasons - and it was his doing; couldn't wait to get back to London :nono: loved his goals in Double season but thought he was bigger than the team and messed big Billy around.

That's not how I recall it.

He never thought he was bigger than the team at all. In fact in terms of work on the park, McAvennie did way more than his fair share.

He was nailing that wee ride Jenny Blythe and she didn't like it up here.

In fact, he hardly lived up here full time at all. He flew up on the first flight out of Stanstead every Monday morning, and flew back every Saturday evening, pretty much the moment he was showered and changed.

Difficult to sustain that over any period of time, so he went back.

Of course he split in apparently messy fashion fro the top-heavy blonde looker and I think regretted leaving us when he did for the rest of his career.

For a period of 18 months he was one of the great Celtic strikers of my time.

Spot on, Billy said the fastest thing out of Celtic Park was McAvennie after the game, but whilst he was on the pitch he was absolutely superb.
Of course when he left he had the chance to join Arsenal, destined to win the league that season, or go back to West Ham, destined to be relelgated.
He chose West Ham.
But he is still considered an absolute legend down there.

He was good. New Years 88 and SCF comeback v Dundee Utd were magical days and also a very hard worker who matched up well with Walker or McGhee.

But maybe we look at Macca with rose-tinted glasses. He only gave us 17 months - the 2nd spell was a mistake.

I looked back at CelticWiki to check and you'll see McAvennie admitted he'd pissed McNeill off with his behaviour. If that's not messing him around, I don't know what is.

McAvennie said they had a deal that he'd be back for training on Monday and was always late. Billy went out on a limb for the guy. Can't imagine Stein doing that for anyone and big Billy was having to deal with slightly different new breed of player that had a bit of money, certainly compared to the ones Stein had.

Can you imagine that under our current manager?

And sorry, if someone thinks they should have different rules compared to the rest of his workmates, that's someone that thinks he's bigger than the team.

I'd split the difference in a good debate.

Off the pitch he was dazzled by the bright lights of London and the accompanying distractions, otherwise known as "The Arsehole Effect."

However on the pitch he gave his all for the jersey and knocked his pan in, putting in a shift every time.

That's how i remember it.

I take your point, but Big Jock did have to contend with that kind of thing from players like Jinky (all those stories of phoning round pubs, or coping with Jinky turning up to training wasted) and George Connolly going AWOL. The motives and circumstances might have differed but he still had to deal with players disappearing off or having too much of a social life.

Certain managers will tolerate things as long as results are coming in, there used to be some wild stories about the Martin O'Neill era team and their attitude to sobriety and monogamy, while der hun at one stage in the 90s had almost an entire team out for drink driving.

As for Ronnie, I agree that he has little tolerance for that kind of thing.

Different times then I suppose.

Didn't know half the stuff we do now or have half of the expectations on the players.
