Jimmy Delaney, my Grannies' full cousin, God rest them both, 13 years in the Hoops before Matt Busby took him south, another who in my eyes along with Quinn, McGrory, McNair and Thomson (Bertie) should have made the 'Greatest Ever Celts' team.

That's some boast to be able to say that :worthy:

The great Delaney. My old Maths teacher was Matt Lynch and he raved about Jimmy.

Quoting limited to 3 levels deepPosted Imageformer Celtic man in the line-up, Charlie Kelly, second from the right in the front row. His senior career was ruined by having to serve in the Royal Navy, and he ended up playing Junior for Duntocher Hibs, Bellshill Athletic and St Anthony's.

This is either the Erskine Hospital Charity Cup final vs Renfrew at Tinto Park, Friday 4/7/52, or the Smyllum Cup final vs Duntocher Hibs at Moore Park, Saturday 5/7/52. The good old Ants won both.

My money's on the Smyllum Cup final, which the Ants won 8-0. The shadows look about right for 4.45 on a Saturday afternoon, as opposed to 8.45 on a Friday evening. Also, the surface and the dusty state of the players' boots look right for a game played on the black ash at 'Stoor Park'.

The Ants team that day was O'Grady (who went to Cowdenbeath), Conroy (Celtic), Graham, Turnbull, O'Donnell (Ayr United via Irvine Victoria), Cavenagh, Mitchell, Elliott, Martin, Kelly and Philbin. Sorry I can't be precise about which player is which in the photo as right-half Peter Turnbull is sitting behind the cup in his role as captain, so mucking up the half-back trio. I think the guy in the suit may be match-secretary Jim McGlone, but I don't know the trainer's name - looks like he should be running Porky's!

If that is the Smyllum Cup, it was presented to the orphanage by Celtic legend Charlie Shaw.
Jeez that's magnificent.

O'Grady the goalie is my mate's uncle Harry who is still in Govan and is immensely proud of playing for the Ants.

He gave me the pic and the names are on the back so I'll dig it out.
The names would be most welcome as I will be putting the picture in the club photo archive. Please let Harry O'Grady know that he is welcome at McKenna Park any time and will certainly get the VIP treatment if he makes an appearance. A near contemporary of his, Chris Mullen (Ants/Celtic), came along to a game a couple of years ago. :)
I have tweeted the back of the picture with the names. Tinypic is down just now :nono:

Is that queue for a Celtic v zombie game?
Could be for the European Cup final 1961, the Madrid v Frankfurt game.
I came across this picture and a pointer towards the answer to it by total coincidence when looking for something else in the Mitchell Library.

It stated the queues were from July 1955.
A quick search on google says there was a Billy Graham outdoor evangelical tour hosted at Hampden in "the spring" of 1955 which 100,000 attended.

dark shorts? Never seen this before.... black or green and whats the story?
In the 1928/29 season there was a Scottish League rule that stated that there had to be a difference in colour of shorts between the teams. The away side usually changed to black shorts if the home side wore white ones. I think I mentioned it before on here and complained that it made Celtic look like a third division team from Portugal. :(
All Hail AntsHistory.

Dug out the story in the Mitchell and we DID wear black shorts and black socks and as AntsHistory says it WAS down to regulations that were imposed in 1927/28 season whereby one team had to wear black shorts if there was a clash of shorts.

This is the original unphotoshopped version of the League match at Ibrox that appeared in the Daily Ranger.
Posted Image

This is from the Glasgow Cup Final a week previous which we won. Note we wore our normal shorts but it was only League matches that were affected by the new regulation.

This is from the League match at Ibrox, showing the huns winner in the 1-0 match, our first defeat of the season. It clearly shows us in black shorts and black socks.
Posted Image

This is from the match report of the 1-0 defeat. It reads "Celtic in the new regulation dress looked funereal in their black pants and were subjected to some banter by the amused crowd".
Posted Image

As an aside the cartoon from the same match is quite good although it shows Tommy McInally, (who was sent off), wrongly wearing white shorts.
Excuse me. Is this a public riot or just a gathering of relations??

This old bhoy sums up the whole of the Lisbon story and so much more in that one single picture.
This is the face of a Celtic supporter who has been to Lisbon and seen us reach the highest pinnacle in a lifetime where he has seen Celtic all through his adult life win no more than 5 League titles between 25 and 65, 8 Scottish Cups and 2 League Cups.

From the leanest of the Lean Years to the to the eternal bliss of Lisbon, the sheer joy on his face sums it all up.
