The man holding the scarf, in the suit, is a guy called Pat Connelly.

I knew him and his son Jim when I was about 14.

Anyone know anything about him/them?
Yes I knew Pat.
He ran the British Legion club in Motherwell. (now Jack Daniels).
He lived on Bellshill Road (the posh part of Forgewood  ). I was just a lad at the time but knew some of his sons. (Felix, Dennis, Brian.. and another one whose name I can't remember.)
Pat knew Jock Stein very well, and I seem to remember him bringing the Scottish Cup around friend's houses after one of our cup wins ..possibly 65.
I think he was a regular candidate as a Councillor in Local elections. He didn't get in when we lived there, - it was always a Communist called Jimmy Sneddon who won "Ward 4" - Pat may have won the seat after Jimmy retired - not sure about that. We moved to Wishaw in my early teens.
Pat was a great contact for European Match tickets for friends - he seemed to know a few with influence at Celtic Park, and was always helpful in that regard.

Cheers for that.

I knew he was a Wishaw bloke.

In my youthful eyes he was a very important guy for tickets. Nice bloke too IIRC

Forgewood is in Motherwell, not Wishaw. Sorry if I confused you there. :)

Awesome. Nearly greetin' when I was reading it. We should never allow these things to die out.

Used to go to Pittodrie back in the day and we would get into the trade union club down near the quayside.

There was an old man who used to sing this every time and another song about Charlie Tully to the tune of 'Davy Crockett, king of the wild frontier'.

Another old guy sang a song about Rudolf Hess flying from Germany to see the Celtic play ! :cuckoo: Seriously ! The lyrics were amazing.

Pittodrie was some trip back then. :)
That's amazing Celtic Ireland :worthy:

Regarding the old trips to Pittodrie, I remember we used to go to this wee pub down near the docks after the games (sorry, can't remember the names) and they always made us very welcome. The locals used to ask us to sing certain songs - The John Thomson Song and The Coronation Cup Song come to mind. However, invariably year after year the atmosphere would be spoiled sooner or later by some nutjobs singing rebel songs. They just didn't get it. The locals liked us and they wanted to hear our Celtic songs, they didn't like the rebs. As soon as they were aired, the guy that ran / owned (?) the pub would chuck the nutters out. To be fair to him, he let the rest of us stay but that would be the end of the singing for the night (or else, we were out on our arses as well). We still used to enjoy it after that though. Pool, darts and dominoes competitions between us the the locals.

Great times.
It was the same in the union club. On those Pittodrie visits that's where I first heard, Lizzy and Philip, Oh Hampden in the sun and the Racing club song.

Fantastic memories. Aberdeen fans would sing the Northern Lights, Flower of Scotland etc but sadly there always a drunk singing the usual IRA nonsesnse not even the old time rebel songs.

Pat is my best mate's Granda'. Quite a character too, he was the provost of Motherwell for a while.

Still goes to CP now and again, and as was said was big pals with JS and big Billy. My mate has more than one picture of himself with the Scottish Cup, League Cup and the old league trophy after Mr Connelly would take it round to their's to show it off.

Infamous story was that the Scottish Cup was passed around the British Legion one night in the 70's filled with lager to drink out of and the wee guy on the lid was knocked off. Cue, trip to a trophy shop on the Monday.
