Awesome. Nearly greetin' when I was reading it. We should never allow these things to die out.

Used to go to Pittodrie back in the day and we would get into the trade union club down near the quayside.

There was an old man who used to sing this every time and another song about Charlie Tully to the tune of 'Davy Crockett, king of the wild frontier'.

Another old guy sang a song about Rudolf Hess flying from Germany to see the Celtic play ! :cuckoo: Seriously ! The lyrics were amazing.

Pittodrie was some trip back then. :)

That's amazing Celtic Ireland :worthy:

Regarding the old trips to Pittodrie, I remember we used to go to this wee pub down near the docks after the games (sorry, can't remember the names) and they always made us very welcome. The locals used to ask us to sing certain songs - The John Thomson Song and The Coronation Cup Song come to mind. However, invariably year after year the atmosphere would be spoiled sooner or later by some nutjobs singing rebel songs. They just didn't get it. The locals liked us and they wanted to hear our Celtic songs, they didn't like the rebs. As soon as they were aired, the guy that ran / owned (?) the pub would chuck the nutters out. To be fair to him, he let the rest of us stay but that would be the end of the singing for the night (or else, we were out on our arses as well). We still used to enjoy it after that though. Pool, darts and dominoes competitions between us the the locals.

Great times.

Another one was that the friendly between Celtic and Real Madrid in the early 60s was, he said, in aid of a Jewish charity. He said it was in the match programme. I'm thinking he might have got mixed up and maybe there was an ad or sponsorship for a charity, rather than the match being played for charity. Although I could be totally wrong on this. They said that Celtic were brilliant that night (against their usual performances of 'hopeless') and were sent back out to receive the acclaim of the crowd.
I don't know who "Wee Silver" was but Alex Byrne was often referred to as "Alice Byrne", mainly because he wasn't exactly keen on the old 50-50 tackles.

As for the game against Real Madrid, I was there and it was played in September 1962 and was indeed a charity game. I still have the match programme. The game was to raise funds for the JNF Charitable Trust "whose funds were devoted to the rehabilitation of refugee women and children from Europe and North Africa". Interestingly, this was a charity that had been adopted by a group known as the Glasgow Blue and White Committee and the trophy that they played for that evening was even called the Blue and White Trophy. An interesting name for a Celtic friendly. I am pretty sure that there was a strong Jewish influence either in the Blue and White Committee or the JNF Charitable Trust. The Convenor of the Committee was a guy called Max Benjamin. At that time, Real Madrid were the world's top team, so it was quite a coup to bring them to Celtic Park, especially as we were rank rotten at the time. The game ended 3-1 for Madrid and if I recall correctly, Real were 3-0 up at half-time. But Celtic played really well in the second half and the crowd did insist on a lap of honour. In fact, I seem to recall that a large crowd even gathered outside the city centre hotel where the team were having a post-match meal and insisted that the players put in an appearance at the windows. The Madrid team featured all their great stars like Puskas and Di Stefano so it was a very special night.

Talking of Broomfield, I was over at my uncle's yesterday and he was talking again about The Black Pudding.

Such is my ailing memory, I've already forgotten the player referred to.

Celtic were "hopeless" at the time and one of the players went to take a corner or a shy and a black pudding landed at his feet, accompanied by the legend, "There, that makes two of you".

Bertie Auld and i think the shout was "that makes 12 o yi", needless to say ten therty couldnae move for laughing

I think your recollection is closer to the truth FLC than the popular version of "that makes 2 of ye"

Bobby Carroll was the player in question. 1 October 1960 - he went to take a corner kick and

"I stepped back to get my run-up and this thing, this black thing, came flying over out of the crowd behind me and landed in the penalty box. I took the corner and Johnny Divers headed over the bar. So while the ball is out of play, I go to have a look. I recognise the horseshoe shape, it's a black puddin' lying there and I'm still looking when the referee comes up. "What is it?" he says. "It's a black puddin'" I say. And right at that moment, the voice from the crowd, "Aye, Carroll, and that makes effin' 12 o' ye!" It was definitely 12 and it was in the penalty box, not at the corner flag."
Talking With Celtic, 2001

Who in their right mind would take a black pudding to a game to throw it on the pitch    I know things were bad but still . . .

Did they give the seasons/dates for the pics? and all player names? Or do we have to figure it all out ourselves again?

We don't need your Colin Stein.....
........Eusebio or Alan Gilzean
We've got someone twice as good
We've got Harry Hood........

Can't remember the BBC comentator's name at the time, but frightfully posh and will always remember: "It's a goal, its a goal by Herry Hood."
