I was at that game, and it doesn't stick in my mind as having been particularly cold. Maybe that's because *every* game at Pittodrie was particularly cold!

Would I be right in thinking I recall it as the first time an SC game was televised live other than a final?

Edit: I'd forgotten there was a 0-0 replay, but I went to the second replay at Dens, which McClair's goal won for us. I recall it as a really terrific game.
What parts of the ground did we get at Dens Park again for the replay? Memory tells me i was in the Dens "Jungle" part. Might be hallucinating though.
Think Aberdeen got the home part behind the goals and prob some of the main stand, giving us the rest.
I was behind the goal at Dens - The end where McLair's hit from the edge of the box flew into the net.

A Great Celtic night - One of my favourites.

I was in the "Jungle" bit that night - the South Stand or the "Derry" as they call it. Definitely remember standing on one of the wedding benches that wasn't covered by the roof (pouring down but it meant I could see better) and giving Leighton dogs abuse "bandy bandy". Went to the three games...and the we barely bothered to turn up at Tynecastle in the next round :(

Likewise I was in the covered enclosure with benches.

Horrible wet night but great game. Found this online:

Perhaps the most unusual game between the clubs in this grand old tournament came in February 1987 when they were required to play at Dens Park in Dundee. Two ties, firstly at Pittodrie and then at Parkhead, had ended in draws resulting in a deciding game to be played at the neutral venue of Dens.

The first game at Pittodrie is best remembered as the day after Rangers had ignominiously lost to Hamilton Accies at Ibrox in the third round of the tournament with the Hamilton goal scorer Adrian Sprott becoming an unlikely celebrity whose name will be forever more be associated with the Scottish Cup and that goal.

Celtic fans have always travelled to Pittodrie in large numbers but seldom have they travelled north in such good spirits than they did on a cold February Sunday just 24 hours after Accies' famous victory. Their joyous mood was increased as their team raced into a 2-0 half time lead on a treacherous, frosty surface. However, Aberdeen had a fine side and boasted players of the quality of Jim Leighton, Willie Miller, Alex McLeish and a young Joe Miller and they came roaring back at Celtic in the second half to equalise and near the end they had chances to win the game, so much so that the Celtic fans were ultimately happy to accept a replay back at Celtic Park.

The clubs were required to play on a Sunday as this was one of the first ever Scottish football matches to be televised live. A draw was probably a fair result and in view of the entertainment on show 55,000 fans then packed into Parkhead for the replay which was a tense and rather disappointing affair that finished 0-0. The day after officials from both clubs met and decided to play the deciding game in Dundee although Celtic had initially been keen to play it at Hampden given the massive crowd that had attended the second game at Parkhead.

Dens Park was full to capacity for the third game and heavy rain did not dampen the spirits of the supporters who turned out on a night of foul weather. One moment of magic separated the teams after 300 minutes of football when a terrific Paul McStay pass sent Brian McClair clear on goal and the Celtic forward slid the ball home for what turned out to be the winning goal. Celtic, inspired by their 37 years old veteran Danny McGrain, had defended resolutely in the second half and in the closing seconds it took a wonder save from Pat Bonner to keep out a chipped shot from Peter Weir to preserve the their lead and win the game.

Despite the rain the Celtic fans left the ground singing their victory anthems all the way back home although there was to be no happy ending as Celtic lost to Hearts in the next round at Tynecastle.
It's interesting to note that had that third game resulted in another draw then there was further reply in Dundee arranged for a few days later and this whole saga later encouraged the SFA to bring in a new rule that penalty kicks would decide any replayed game in future after extra time, a rule which stands until this day

Note the date of our foundation in the 1916/17 Handbook. It said this in Handbooks right up to the late 20s.
September 1887.
There's a reason for that. Can't remember why, but a pal knows. Will give him a shout to refresh my memory

I was behind the goal too -- but the other one from you! I hadn't planned it that way, in fact hadn't thought I'd be able to go at all. But a friend who supported Aberdeen got a ticket for their end so I went with him. Couldn't get one for our end.

Obviously not ideal, and a fair amount of care was needed. But we've all had to do it at some point, right? :naught:

Still a terrific night, though it would've been more fun doon the other end!

Our record in cup finals in that period is appalling.I think we won something like 2 Out of 12 from 1970 to 1973 Starting with Aberdeen, Feyenoord & Rangers in 1970 and finishing with Dundee LCF IN '73. Finals include EC, SC, LC & Dryborough Cup. We lost 4 League Cups (on the spin!) 3 Dryborough Cups (on the spin!) 2 Scottish Cups & the Big one in 1970. Our only Successes Scottish Cup '71 & '72. Amazing. This was my era of watching Celtic home & away & none of us could work out what was going on. They just never seemed to turn up on the day.

I was only a kid at the time, but I was at all of those League Cup Final defeats, and the Scottish one in 1970.

Was fortunate enough to be at the Scottish Cup win in 1972 as well.

The old school supporters at the time were mystified at our record in the League Cup Finals, the Partick and Dundee finals being particularly hard to take.
