Didn't think anyone was still reading this page, thought it was dying off. :(
Remember the game at Hampden but i'll admit to looking up the web for the answer my lord.

I saw play Airdrie play Man City, 0-0, at Broomfield in the Texaco Cup around about the same time.

14,000 turned up to see the stars, Francis Lee etc and Man City played most of their second team.

And Airdrie knocked them out as well. Man City were always my favourite other club and I've seen them a few times up here but their performances in Scotland have always been dreadful.

Not a chance of dying off - whilst you all have pics and memories to post, I'll still be reading them!!

I can't reciprocate - I'm sure my dad did have things like programmes, etc but he died in 1977 and then a lot of stuff was put in the bin when my mum died 20 years ago. I'm afraid I was too upset at the time to think to look in any of the old boxes.....

But I love the lot, particularly the personal pictures from many years ago - great stuff! So keep them coming.

Had to laugh at the thought of 25,000 getting in to Broomfield.
Getting in was never the problem, it was getting back out again that was the difficult bit. Total dump, and a dangerous one as well.

Talking of Broomfield, I was over at my uncle's yesterday and he was talking again about The Black Pudding.

Such is my ailing memory, I've already forgotten the player referred to.

Celtic were "hopeless" at the time and one of the players went to take a corner or a shy and a black pudding landed at his feet, accompanied by the legend, "There, that makes two of you".

He also mentioned a player called 'Alice' (Alec someone) and I've heard him in the past talking about someone they called 'Wee Silver'.

Another one was that the friendly between Celtic and Real Madrid in the early 60s was, he said, in aid of a Jewish charity. He said it was in the match programme. I'm thinking he might have got mixed up and maybe there was an ad or sponsorship for a charity, rather than the match being played for charity. Although I could be totally wrong on this. They said that Celtic were brilliant that night (against their usual performances of 'hopeless') and were sent back out to receive the acclaim of the crowd.

Anyone any info on all of the above?

We were also talking about the Celtic Graves and I learned for the first time that all my dad's family are buried in St Peter's Dalbeth.

What's the story with this lorry again?

I've got the real answer.

(I think)

Dont know what you mean CI?

J.D.Stewart Ltd of Shettleston would have been working at CP at the time, they had a large shed and a much smaller one which i stood on top of that day up the Celtic end, both sheds had the J.D.Stewart name on them (i showed a pic of the sheds earlier in this thread), i assume the lorry was being used on site and the biscuit tin mob/board would have used it to save money, probably bunged the driver a fiver

Would be interested to hear your version :suspect:
DOH Exact same as yours.

Ex player and then electrician at the club, John McAlindon was the ghuy driving the van!

Lads, another wee appeal for a photo please, dished out with a newspaper of the time. It's a colour supplement, showing the team running out the tunnel with the crowd in the b/g, Stein is standing clapping right next to my great grandfather. I've only ever saw the picture once in my ggrandas house, many years ago. It's since gone missing and I'd dearly love to see it again, please if anyone has it, post in here.

I don't know who "Wee Silver" was but Alex Byrne was often referred to as "Alice Byrne", mainly because he wasn't exactly keen on the old 50-50 tackles.

As for the game against Real Madrid, I was there and it was played in September 1962 and was indeed a charity game. I still have the match programme. The game was to raise funds for the JNF Charitable Trust "whose funds were devoted to the rehabilitation of refugee women and children from Europe and North Africa". Interestingly, this was a charity that had been adopted by a group known as the Glasgow Blue and White Committee and the trophy that they played for that evening was even called the Blue and White Trophy. An interesting name for a Celtic friendly. I am pretty sure that there was a strong Jewish influence either in the Blue and White Committee or the JNF Charitable Trust. The Convenor of the Committee was a guy called Max Benjamin. At that time, Real Madrid were the world's top team, so it was quite a coup to bring them to Celtic Park, especially as we were rank rotten at the time. The game ended 3-1 for Madrid and if I recall correctly, Real were 3-0 up at half-time. But Celtic played really well in the second half and the crowd did insist on a lap of honour. In fact, I seem to recall that a large crowd even gathered outside the city centre hotel where the team were having a post-match meal and insisted that the players put in an appearance at the windows. The Madrid team featured all their great stars like Puskas and Di Stefano so it was a very special night.
