Aye Yogi he could not stay any closer to CP and he was also living on top of CP1
And he also knew what the players were earning.

I'd take a guess that was about double the wage of an ordinary Glasgow worker of the time.

Am I right in thinking this is where the police horses came charging down into the Celtic fans in Janefield Street in the early 80s, causing that fence in front of the flats (in the right of the picture) to collapse?
That was a very scary night,i still can't believe the stupidness of the Police. :nono:
To this day I dont know how people didnt die. a double brick wall collapsed next to me with the pressure. Thankfully as it allowed people breathing space.

Hugh Maxwell was bad though I do remember shortly after he signed he scored a goal after something like 9 seconds into a game and I was thinking that we'd got ourselves a real star. I was so wrong. But was he worse than John Dowie? Now there's a debate that could run and run.

Talking of bad players, does anyone remember Paddy Turner? I seem to recall that we signed him from Morton. He was murder!

Okay. I have to admit that it's a very close call as to who's the worst Celtic player I've ever seen.

Te contenders are the obvious ones already mentioned :

Maxwell
Dowie
Kay

and Jimmy Bone

The scary thing is thst Jock Stein signed 3 out of the 4 I've mentioned.

Jimmy Bone is an interesting one, all of these are before my time but i have heard them all mentioned on here but i don't remember seeing Jimmy Bone listed as one of the worst, a quick google reveals he got a couple of Scotland Caps (even scoring a goal) at a time when i imagine Caps were not just handed out to anybody the way they are now. Was he passed his best when we signed him or just a really pish player?

Also how do these dumplings you have mentioned compare to the more modern diddies like Paul McLaughlin (hi Caltonbhoy ;) ) Wayne Biggins, Jim Melrose, Du Wei, Scott Marshall?

I can't imagine them being worse

He was pish for Celtic.

When we signed him I thought it was a shrewd signing along the lines of Harry Hood and Dixie Deans. He was definitely a good player but he was just pish - of the Biggins variety - when I seen him play for us.

We're being a bit unfair to guys Maxwell, Bone, Kay and Biggins. They were hardly in the place 5 minutes and had no time to make an impression.

My old man always maintained that no Celt ever set out to do badly and that had Stein arrived earlier then guys like Jackson, Colrain and Eric Smith might have been on the same level as the Lions. Had Stein came later then Lennox and Jinky would have been spoken in the same tones as Jackson and Colrain.

Compare this with someone like Peter Grant. Big Celtic man but very ordinary player who was there for 15 years, manager after manager, and got a testimonial. Ask Jim Brogan (12 years) John Hughes (13 years) Bobby Murdoch (12 years) where were their testimonial games ? Even Jinky and Bobby had to share one together !

Bobby Lennox was nearly punted to Falkirk at one point - Jock Stein :worthy: completely transformed Celtic.

Jimmy Bone was a decent player for Thistle and later went on to play for and manage every team in the world.

Hardly got a kick of the ball for Celtic - harsh to lump him with some of the parade of haddies who've worn the hoops.

Hugh Maxwell...well, he's been listed on the left as my favourite player for about three years. Nice to see the campaign gathering support.....

One of the players mentioned allegedly went on to manage and allegedly put four Airdrie players' wages on a horse.

This has been a brilliant and invaluable thread - some amazing photos. My first trip to Paradise was in 1975, aged 8. Celtic were played off the park by Hibs and were 2-0 down before the gradually thickening fog that day resulted in an abandonment of the game - didn't matter to me as I was already hooked on Celtic by that stage. Was in the Rangers End that day with my Da and some of his mates. And in this thread I finally saw a photo from that day - incredible.
My next trip over to see a game was in October 1976 to see Kenny Dalglish score both goals in a 2-0 victory over Motherwell - we were in the Rangers End again and had a great view of the two very fine finishes. Anyone any recollections of that particular game?
Folk Singer - I have hundreds of old pics from that era but unfortunately I don't have one from that game.

I too was in the Rangers end that day and Kenny Dalglish scored both goals in a 2-0 win at that end. Motherwell had just beaten Rangers 3-1 the previous week and this was a good win for us as they had decent players then such as Willie Pettigrew, Vic Davidson and Peter Marinello.

There was a decent crowd of 30,000 at it although you can add 5-6000 on to that as kids were lifted over in those days (I was one of them). The game was televised and the goals can be seen on youtube montages of Kenny's time as a Celt. Joe Craig and Pat Stanton were not long at Parkhead and were settling in.

I'll have another look at my old stuff to see if I can see anything for you.
We stayed over and saw the highlights on STV the next day. Dalglish's first goal flew into the roof of the net and his second was a daisy cutter. Danny McGrain was a gem of a player at that time.Celtic Park had a magical quality for me then and I recall buying a scarf that day in the old souvenir shop - I still have that scarf.
We came back in October 1977 to see a nervy 3-2 win against an Ayr Utd team who I think were eventually relegated. We celebrated big Roddie McDonald's winner like we had captured the Treble! The team were really struggling with Dalglish gone and McGrain,Conn and Stanton all missing through injury. I recall Joe Fillippi played well for Ayr that day and Stein signed him the following week to fill in at right back. Also Celtic had Frank Munro at centre half - oh dear.
As a young supporter that season 1977-1978 certainly strengthened the immune system for any future disappointments
God Aye. I still get shivers recalling Fillippi, Munro-and Roy Kay.

Auld says that there were four not two World Class players in the Lisbon Lions - Bobby Murdoch,Jimmy Johnstone,Bobby Lennox and Tommy Gemmell.

I've heard Gerry McNee say that in public also although he had Bertie in there and not Bobby.
