I'll finish tonight with a random example of various players from Ireland & Scotland which I picked without bias :ph43r:
Have you noticed how much better Scotland are when fat boy Adam is out the team - none of that, 'I'm not closing Gareth Bale down in the last minute' crap.

What did Scotland that summer was the defence couldn't cope when McGrain and McQueen were out with injury.

No exaggeration to say those two were the best players in Europe in their respective positions in 1977.

Both were integral to our game. And both were massive losses the following year.

And I'd have taken the far superior Andy Gray to the fat flat track bully that was Derek Johnstone.

Hindsight, eh?

There was also the minor detail of leaving out Souness of the first two games, instead playing Rioch and Mason.
Maybe not the best move to leave the bloke with the shiny new European Cup winners medal cooling his heels on the bench.

And as you say the Andy Gray thing was extraordinary. Was he not both England's POTY and YPOTY that season?

Johnstone scored 40 goals that season so he was there on merit.

It was Ally's loyalty to Joe Harper which cost Gray which in hindsight was a crazy decision.

Sady for Ally Rioch and Masson had peaked a year previously. Souness and Gemmill were the main men by 1978.

I didn't realise Harper was there... I thought he'd been banned for life after Copenhagen!

Even still. 1-1 with Iran and they score both goals is spectacular even by Scotland standards.

Didn't Brady sign Cascarino in '91, the season after that strip?
