To be fair old Lawrence (their chairman) was the first to greet the Celtic team when they landed with the European Cup. They tell me that both boards were very cordial - until Murray took over at Ibrox. |

That game really was an anti climax. Still! it made it all the better to win the League at home the following week. |

I'm pretty sure i've read Struth died not all that long after that painting was presented to him. He had part of a leg amputated late in life and Maley almost looks as if he is helping to steady his old foe. I'm sure like all managers, they would have had a deep respect for each other albeit coming from two opposites of the spectrum. I've read too that Maley was supposed to have been an avowed royalist but there's a danger that stuff written a long time ago is accepted and unchallenged without any evidence. The same can be said for the story that Maley never went back near Celtic Park whilst Tom White was alive and was more likely to have been seen at Ibrox hob nobbing it. For such a story to be true i'd imagine there would be plenty of pictures and stories showing Maley at Ibrox available in the Mitchell to back them up. I haven't seen any and in fact i find it a slight that he would be accused of hob nobbing it at Ibrox after devoting his life to Celtic. |

Maley had a great deal of respect for Struth and, as McGrory said, "always liked to keep his composure." The stuff about him being a staunch royalist is strange. His father and grandfather were both soldiers stationed in Ulster but the Irish links at Celtic were very strong between 1917-1935 under the omnipotent Maley, which at least cast doubts upon his royalism. There's even pictures of the Banks' menu and it's all Irish-themed And even if so - what does it matter? He brought the credo to the club that the player himself mattered, not his creed nor nationality.Celtic and Rangers also lend money to each other in times of need - especially during the early '30s. They both basically created the biggest clubs in the country, near the end of their life and one was getting his lifetime-achievement award - pretty sure it was just sportsmanship . The fact he didn't return to CP for 12 years and the subsequent return to CP was a pretty huge deal iirc - it all happened after the death of Patsy, Kelly proposed a testimonial for him against a side of his wish. He was past 80 at the point he stopped going and war-time football at CP wasn't a sight to beholdy anyway... |

I could definitely see Maley staying away from CP after he left. He was 71 at the time and lived to a grand old age of 89, only going into the home where he died 6 months previously. Tom White died in 1947, seven years after Maley left CP so the door would have been open for his return but of course he was a proud man, even an obstinate man so a return may not have been easy. As you say, when Patsy Gallagher died in 1953, Robert Kelly saw how upset Maley was and took the opportunity to make amends and get the great man back where he belonged. What i would contest until i've seen proof is the story that he was a regular at Ibrox, hob nobbing it. I found a wee snippet of a story when he was involved in a car crash on the A8 going to a Hibs game in the 50s and injured his finger. Hibs were playing Rangers but he went into the Hibs dressing room, (not the Rangers dressing room) to have the finger treated where he was given a warm welcome. Maybe he was reporting on the match for a newspaper though i've never seen anything to back that up or maybe he was just a football man who liked to watch football, right up to his 80s. |

Maley attempted to join up for WW1 and was outraged when the recruiting officer told him he was too old for military service. Don't know anything about his feelings for royalty but some of the stuff he got up to whilst manager doen't make for good reading, such as deliberatley paying McGrory less than the rest of the first team because he refused to join Arsenal. When McGrory was manager at Killie he brought a team to Celtic Park for a league game and won, when McGrory visited Maley in his office after the game Maley refused to acknowledge McGrory and never looked up from his desk. Poor show. |

Think this is from around 68 or 69, judging by Hibs strip (all green socks, not with white tops like 70s) and because of wee Bobby's short hairstyle. |

I would guess it's Parkhead (I never recall it referred to as Celtic Park back then!) with the concrete legs on the crash barriers? |

Mibees for another thread boss but probably needs further investigation which i have tried to do in the past. Here's my take. Struth had his leg amputated at the Victoria Infirmary in January 1953 and made a excellent recovery, apparently at the New Years day game of 1954 he fell down the stairs of the Directors box at Celtic Park and had to once again be taken to the Victoria Infirmary. He retired at the end of that season and i think that photo would have been taken round about that time which was fully 14 years after Maley had left Celtic. I have no long finished reading 2 books about Struth and one of them was very interesting and well worth the visit to the library, the other written by that bigot Leggatt is probably the worse book i have ever read (although been told his book on Scot Symon was even worse) he goes on and on about the Willie Maley/Sam English comment pointing out that their relationship was never the same after that which is definitely not true. In the other book by their club historian David Mason he dedicates a few pages titled Struth and Maley in which he states Maley was a staunch Royalist, whose business card included a picture of him shaking hands with the King. he goes on to say how Maley and Struth were close friends sharing a mutual respect despite operating on opposite sides of the "great divide". One snippet that brought a wee smile to my face reads:
As for Maley being a Royalist, i personally dont think there is enough evidence to say for certain but at a push i would say he was, not unlike many of our clubs historians who believe that he was and have said so in print. There is newspaper evidence that Willie Maley was honoured at Ibrox and given a Silver Salver which was inscribed with a personal friendship message signed by all the Rangers officials. |

Some really interesting history being discussed here, I was unaware of Willie Maleys statement at the John Thomson inquiry, there is a really good article by Kevtic on Celtic Wiki on the tragic event which is well worth reading. I suppose it is fair to say that the tragedy also included Sam English, who was badly affected by the incident. Unfortunately there is also an awful lot of bile out on the Internet regarding the tragic event, which are best avoided. With regard to Willie Maley being a so called royalist, he came from an army family, he was brought up in the Empire, Britain had just been through a bloody and terrible war, it was different times, for me it is no shock. |

And even if so - what does it matter? He brought the credo to the club that the player himself mattered, not his creed nor nationality.
