No idea myself, I'm just glad you didn't tell me it wasn't CP
Bridgeton Waverley @ Celtic Park
Brilliant shout FLC.

CP1 and 2 often held Junior Cup games and even the final on a good few ocassions.
Celtic's first ever trophy is in the pic which points to the locality of the team in question and the trophies on show point towards it not being a professional team.

The North Eastern Cup, won by Celtic in 1889 and 1890 before we turned wur noses up and didn't take part any more due to bigger and better things.

It looks like the pavilion that burned down in 1904, I have had a rethink on the football team, the hun beat Hearts at Celtic Park in 1902 after a couple of replays, so it may be the Kaiser's favourite British team, they also won the Glasgow Cup in 1902. Third Lanark won the cup season 04-05 which was afterwards. I am no expert on old Rangers players though.
I'll burned down in 1904 ye.

:arrr:

Survived the fire in 1904 which burned down the original Janefield Stand with damage to the top tier and barrer on top tier different in pre and post 1904 pics.
In the pre 1904 pics the barrier is criss crossed, in the post 1904 pics the barrier is plain vertical posts.

Hmm so this pic is dated at post 1904.

Finally burned to the ground in 1929.

Think it was Parkhead Juniors who won the Scottish in 1903.They also won the Glasgow Junior cup that same season.

Not a football pic but Celtic related.

The Fairfield Bar in Govan (now the Old Govan Arms) which the Govan South West CSC left from between 1947 and 1980.

Where I used to stand outside in all weathers in the 70s with my Irn Bru and Chhese 'n' onion :worthy:
Was that far from castlegreyskull? Could you walk around that area with a Celtic shirt on without fearing for your life?
Sorry StA, i'm sure i was in Fairfield Pub on may 88, the day of SCF to celebrate before and after the match, but i 'm sure to have been in Parkhead. Still does it exist this pub?

It was Albert Kidd who scored the goals (not Albert Craig)- If I remember Walter Kidd played for Hearts and it took a few moments to realise it was Dundee's Kidd that had scored.

Ps Some great old photo's on here - Personally though a slight reminder to be cheesed off as my father had every Celtic handbook (some great adverts -Irn Bru on sale after the war) which were effectively stolen after he loaned them out for an exhibition.

Kenny had a howler that day.
My old mans recollection of that game was that we missed chance after chance early on, then when they got their first goal we totally caved in.

And yes, Kenny, my all time hero, had a stinker.[/quote]

Your dad's recollection is bang-on. We needed to draw that game to stay top of the league and on the road to ten-in-a-row; we were well on top in the first half, despite losing an early goal to a Derek Johnstone header, and I remember Paul Wilson laying on a tap-in for Kenny which he somehow missed...we squandered a hatful of chances, then when the huns went further ahead early in the second half, we collapsed. However it was the following week that really sickened us...we lost 2-3 at home to Motherwell, and that was our goose cooked.

Superb stuff there CI :worthy:

A few observations:

1. St Anthony's league of the cross football club (!!!) Wonder when they dropped the league of the cross ?

2. The league hall where the party took place is still standing, just off Harmony Row in Govan. Last I knew it was a carpet warehouse.

3. The new ground is said to have been in Broomloan Road whereas the old Moore Park that we recall was in Helen street. Wonder if it was a different site ?

4. Canon McBrearty was some man. There is a huge plaque to his memory in St Anthony's parish on the Govan Road for helping build the parish.

5. There was a huge Irish Catholic population in Govan in those days. The IRA C Coy was based in Govan and Kinning Park from 1918-1923 and drilled in Boilermakers Hall, later hall in Queen Street (now Neptune Street).

Many Celtic fans will recall having a drink in the old Ants' social club before games at Ibrox.
1. We're not sure when the League of the Cross name was dropped. It may have been 1913, when Junior football became professional. Sports played under League of the Cross auspices were strictly amateur.

2. The League Hall was in Hamilton Street, but the entire street was demolished (except for the Hall) and renamed Nethan Street. It was a hardwood flooring warehouse, but that recently relocated. The League Hall was the Ants first pavilion when the club played on a field just south of the Hall between 1904 and 1906. The modern Crossloan Road probably runs over part of that field

3. There were indeed two Moore Parks. The one halfway up Broomloan Road on the west side was originally named the Moorepark Grounds - literally the grounds of an old Georgian mansion. Several Govan teams played there over the years. The Ants took it over when another Junior side Co-operative United went bust in 1906. We got their match-secretary too, a certain Steve Callaghan, who went on to do great things for Celtic. The owners of the park, Harland and Wolff, told us to get out in 1929. We moved to New Moore Park in Helen Street that year, but the "New" tag disappeared very quickly. The Wine Alley scheme was built on top of the old park.

4. Canon McBrearty was an honorary Ant, but the priest who did most to promote the League of the Cross and encouraged sport to be played in the branch was Father Robert Paterson. He had left Govan by the time St Anthony's League of the Cross Football and Athletic Club* was formed, but he retained his connection with the branch. He became a Canon in 1939 at Blantyre St Joseph's.

* Initially the club was known as the 'Athletic Club' or 'League Athletic' for the sake of simplicity. The nickname 'the Ants' came later.
