The famous open day from 1977 or 78.

:ponder:

Advertised in the Celtic View, several thousand mostly kids turned up to see i guess the players going through a training routine.
I never figured out what was the exact point of it.
It wasn't as if we hadn,t seen round the stadium.
Outside of a huns game you could have walked from one corner flag to another without any bother.
And the stand, well unless they were showing you the dressing room or the board room there wasn't much to see.
The whole corporate box and restaurant scene hadn't happening yet.
And there was no chance of us all getting a look in the press box hanging from the stand roof.

Anyway after about ten minutes one young urchin followed by three thousand others had entered the field of play and the open day was over unless you wanted to go on to the centre spot and have a gawp around you.
Still think the highlight of the day was half the crowd running out the open exit gates to wave at a passing Orange Walk going down London Rd.
At least i think they were waving.
Maybe it was an early attempt in seeing how quickly you could empty a stadium.

Suppose it made a change from a Sunday down the barras.

Yogi - my recollection is that Rangers had one as well and this was an initiative by both clubs after some hooliganism particularly when the Huns went on the rampage at Aston Villa in October 1976.

The open day was April 1977.
You're right. I, and most of the schoolchildren from Govan, were there on what was a really sunny day. The police dogs also put on a display. The more things at Ibrox (or Manchester) change the more they stay the same.

Sadly Bobby is in a Care home in Yorkshire now.

Good health is something to be treasured and grateful for.

Partizan Tirana?
...although Johnny Doyle never scored against them. :ponder:
He didn't score against them but he only played against 2 European teams with the no. 11 shorts on. Partizan Tirana and Real Madrid. I'd say you're correct cartuja.

I was at the game but can't remember a Doyle goal being disallowed (that's not to say it didn't happen though as it was more than 30 years ago). I do remember scheidting myself when they scored to make it 1-0 on the night and 2-0 on aggregate. :twitch:

Our performances had been getting steadily worse in Europe year after year but it would have been a new low if the Albanians had knocked us out.

I always find it interesting talking to the auld school when they talk about the stick and real heavy duty pelters that Stevie Chalmers and Yogi got from The Jungle in their early days and yet they ended up respectively the fourth and seventh top goalscorers of all time for Celtic.

Even Jinky got pelters from in there at times - Wonder what they would have made of Sammy? :( ;)

I don't know if it was that day or a sunday game played in the following couple of seasons.
But chaos ensued when fans heading back towards the city from Paradise ran into a number of minor parades being held by the angry people.
A certain Glasgow Tory MP called Teddy Taylor told the police off for not being on the ball so to speak.
He managed to word it without actually blaming anybody.
Needless to say he disappeared from Scottish politics at the next election.

I will always remember my reaction as a wee bhoy when I was first taken to Celtic Park in 1963. I'd only heard my uncles talk about the likes of Chalmers, Murdoch and Hughes and I assumed they were all heroes. My young illusions were shattered after a few visits to CP though. The stick Hughes (in particular), Chalmers, Murdoch, Gemmell and Johnstone took was unbelievavble. It had to be remembered though that we'd had no success for years and our support in general were a miserable bunch to say the least.

Thought he was a great goalie.
Was never the same after getting injured at Wembley.
Sure somebody said he ended up driving a taxi years later.

Matt Lynch taught me in St Gerards in Govan and I think this is the letter Jimmy Duncanson of Rangers wrote to the SFA after Matt was sent off at Ibrox in the 40's.

They broke the mould with Matt. Celtic through and through.
A lad I worked with (and still play football with) sat beside Jimmy Duncanson at Ibrox. Said he was a really nice guy.
That is brilliant. It's something that only a few will ever see.
Thanks for sharing that.
