Cracker of a picture below from Flynnster of the CGS forum.

don't think i've seen a picture of McGrory like that before (esp not whilst he's been a manager).

need someone to confirm: It looks like Benny Lynch could be 3rd from the left back row, maybe.

Posted Image
It is Benny Lynch sitting between Kennaway and Buchan.

Unseen image that has a bit of a mixture - Wonder why McGrory the manager of Kilmarnock is in the photo? Maley, McMenemy, and the 1938 Empire Exhibition team.

I think Benny is the centre of attraction in this.

Could be taken before one of his big fights.

Benny Lynch, now there is a really sad story :(

Died in 1945, last 5 of his life unaccounted for.
There is a set of houses named after Benny [Benny Lynch close] not far from wher his old
street would have been ,a Gorbals Diehard and a World champion but sadly a waste of a young
life.

the Benny Lynch picture is a real gem.

Thanks again for this stuff. Love it.

P.S. Billy Stark no caps. Almost as bad as Harry Hood. Any others who the SFA chose to ignore ?

He never got ANY Scotland caps as far as I'm aware mate, which is just mind-boggling!

As I recall he was quite often the whipping boy for sheep fans, but I can't recall him putting a foot wrong for us. Nor can my St. Mirren supporting mate say anything bad about his time for them.

He was composure personified. Really every midfield would benefit from his type of player.

Maybe he was just that little bit too cool, calm and collected for Scotland and Scottish football...
You're right again Wilfred, Starky never got a single Scotland cap. We'd build a effing team around him these days. :nono:
It pains me to say this but the Scotland manager who never gave Starky a chance was big Jock.

Jock also didn't pick TB for Scotland around that time either.

Ferguson spotted Starky as amateur and took him to St Mirren. Then bought him for Aberdeen the years they won Cup Winners Cup (he was supposed to be replacement for Strachan but WGS stayed for extra year).

Starky was a wonderful player, completely under-rated. He scored in two cup finals in 85-86 for Aberdeen.

And he could have retired on that goal against DeidCo on his OF debut in 87

He is a truly decent man and his eulogy at TB's funeral was him to a tee.

Stevens, McLaren, McVie :boik: and the late Peter Millar were all dirty hackin' thugs - Not a footballer amongst them.

Wark was a good honest pro.

He was brought up in Florence Street and died in August 1946 - I have a family link.

Really tragic and sad tale and his son's life was not much better - The son was only 34 when he passed. :(

You've got a good memory CB

But think this particular Motherwell team had one good player - judging by the strips its 77-78 and this is probably the game where Vic Davidson came back to CP and scored the winner in 1-0 defeat.

We played them 3 times in a week. That league game and then the old two-leg League Cup first round, 0-0 at Fir Park and 4-2 at CP with Wilson, Burns, Craig and McLaren og

Have to say that this pic sums up Fortune's time at Celtic!

Second best - or is that third - to Killie's legendary No29 (I was at the game and even I can't recognise him).

Was this Robbie Keane's debut?

Fortune's last game for us at Utrecht was the worst I've ever seen. Never tried. Don't care if he was moving the next day, we were entitled to more.

Went on holiday in 1987 and met an ex Aberdeen player who shall remain nameless.

He was pissing himself at us signing the big man who was then 32.

He said that Starky was the last guy he'd want to be in the trenches with.

After two or three games I realised yer man didn't have a clue what he was talking about.

Billy was a real thoroughbread who had a football brain and why you'd want him 'in the trenches' was beyond me.

He also said that Aberdeen had the next Jinky - Joe Miller :ffs: and he arrived at Parkhead within weeks later.
Yeah. Complete obsession with "being in the trenches" in Scottish football.

With Billy Stark, that's like using a Ferrari to pull a caravan.

Edit. Wondering if the ex-Aberdeen player was Neale Cooper?...

I know where you're coming from, but the fact the Starky never gathered a cap when Jock was in charge was more to do with number of quality midfielders Scotland had to choose from at that time, the same is true for the recent chat regarding Ian Redford RIP.
Jock could choose from WGS, Souness, Wark, Bett, McStay, Provan, Cooper, John Roberston. Who would you drop to bring in either Stark or Redford? It was only latterly that Jock would pick Roy Aitken and Murdo never got a look in really until he went to Germany.

When looking Starky and Scotland I would say that the major villan hat would more fit Andy Roxburgh, when Starky joined us he hit a superb run of form, scoring 12 goals in his first season, many of them vital to us, he was worth a least a cap just for the recognition of his talent.

The one mega decent thing Roxburgh did do was give TB a cap at the end of 87/88 at Wembley (I was there), TB always said he really appreciated that because it meant he had a cap to give each of his children.
