Cracker of a picture below from Flynnster of the CGS forum.

don't think i've seen a picture of McGrory like that before (esp not whilst he's been a manager).

need someone to confirm: It looks like Benny Lynch could be 3rd from the left back row, maybe.

All of these photos are superb and I thank everyone who posts them. I must say, though, that I'm disappointed that there's been no Bernie Slaven now for about 50 pages.

It is Benny Lynch sitting between Kennaway and Buchan.

Unseen image that has a bit of a mixture - Wonder why McGrory the manager of Kilmarnock is in the photo? Maley, McMenemy, and the 1938 Empire Exhibition team.

I think Benny is the centre of attraction in this.

Could be taken before one of his big fights.

Benny Lynch, now there is a really sad story :(

Died in 1945, last 5 of his life unaccounted for.

I absolutely loved Starky. Could never quite fathom why a midfielder who seemed to score goals almost every other week throughout his career never got as many Scotland caps as he should have.
I'll always remember one night towards the end of what must have been the 92/93 season, when Billy was TB's no.2 at Killie and they had a reserve match one Friday night against the Shire. My mate and I had just erm, conducted some business at one of the flats in Firs Street, and on the way out of the close, who should breeze by on his way into Firs Park but the great man himself.
I'd love to say that we chatted briefly, got his autograph, etc, but in reality 2 stoned teenagers were left literally struck dumb for 5 minutes having witnessed the Legend of Starky.
He never got ANY Scotland caps as far as I'm aware mate, which is just mind-boggling!

As I recall he was quite often the whipping boy for sheep fans, but I can't recall him putting a foot wrong for us. Nor can my St. Mirren supporting mate say anything bad about his time for them.

He was composure personified. Really every midfield would benefit from his type of player.

Maybe he was just that little bit too cool, calm and collected for Scotland and Scottish football...
You're right again Wilfred, Starky never got a single Scotland cap. We'd build a effing team around him these days. :nono:

Went on holiday in 1987 and met an ex Aberdeen player who shall remain nameless.

He was pissing himself at us signing the big man who was then 32.

He said that Starky was the last guy he'd want to be in the trenches with.

After two or three games I realised yer man didn't have a clue what he was talking about.

Billy was a real thoroughbread who had a football brain and why you'd want him 'in the trenches' was beyond me.

He also said that Aberdeen had the next Jinky - Joe Miller :ffs: and he arrived at Parkhead within weeks later.

I remember that game, think it was 1978.

Ran home from school to listen to it on radio 2.

Was afternoon k.o. because Landsdowne didn't have floodlights.

Finished 0-0.

Think you might be onto something there St Anthony

No John Divers in the image so that would rule out the 1938 Empire Exhibition team.

Benny Lynch fought at Celtic park in June 1937 - with McGrory in the line-up in place of Divers (only change) i would say its the 1937 Scottish Cup winning team that beat Aberdeen in April (record crowd 147,365)

Pretty sure Maley has his hands on Sammy Wilson the manager of Benny Lynch.
