Big Billy against Motherwell in their infamous sash strip.
Is that Willie Pettigrew or Jesus on the right of that photo?

How appropriate that the Motherwell sash strip features Big Billy sandwiched between two players with hun connections: Gregor 'the screaming skull' Stevens and the Rev Bobby Watson.

Think the guy sitting next to WM is Connelly and not A. Thomson.

There were a couple of teams who had strips designed like that after seeing Peru, who were a sensation in the 1970 WC Finals; Clydebank, Crystal Palace and Man. City immediately spring to mind. However, we are talking Motherwell here, so not even Perry Mason could clear them of a charge of having sectarian motives for that choice of strip.

edit: What year vs Peru?

Just been reading a bit about that game

Wednesday Oct 4 1933, 7000 saw something unusual with the visit of South American, A Chilea/Peru select which Celtic beat 2-1, no shoulder charging was to be allowed, something that Europeans & South Americans disapproved of at the time.

When i read this my mind shot back to the Racing Club games and that other battle with Athletico Madrid many years later.

P Connolly is in the pool of players for season 29-30 but not 30 -31 the Mwell cup final season .
The two of them are very alike though.

Correct about the Motherwell sash strip. It was briefly fashionable to have these types of jersey. Not sinister. Didn't intend to imply otherwise.
