Yes. In fact they played each other at the weekend in a league game. The Bens won 3 1. There is mention on various sites that the covered terracing at the Bens' ground, Tinto Park, is the largest covered terracing still in existence in Scotland. Might not be for long as (a) there's talk of them moving to a new ground at the south of the existing one and (b) it's in really poor nick. Alex Ferguson claims to be a Benburb supporter and was up at Tinto couple of years ago.

Story goes that the Bens were originally from the Oatlands area. There used to be a shield in teh home dressing room that said they were formed in 1889.

Some sites also say that Tommy Burns played as a goalie for them - got to say I don't think that's true as I only came across it a coukle of years ago.

Years ago the Ants move to Glenboig for a couple of years. Deidco were meant to be buying their ground to turn in to a training facility. Never happened and the Ants came back to Govan before moving to a new ground about a mile and a half up the road.

I'm sure the story about Celtic adopting the hoops after seeing the Ants was in The Glory and the Dream.
Tommy never played in goals for Benburb - Got it checked out as far as the SJFA at Hampden- Never registered and never played in goals in any form for them - He was registered at Maryhill.

St.Ant's historian told me they actually started wearing the hoops about a year after Celtic.
The thought of Tommy in goals is quite amusing :)

Forgot to ask you, do Saint Anthony's still exist as a local parish side and I'll ask the same for the 'Bens'?
St.Anthony's originally played in Red and White - They changed to the hoops 11/12 months after Celtic started wearing them.

In addition to Bobby Evans, Tommy McInally and Willie O'Neill there a loads of St.Anthony;s players signed by Celtic - Malky McDonald,John Colrain, Jimmy McColl, Matt Lynch, Hugh Hilley, Seton Airlie to name but a few who did us a turn.

Jimmy Gribben to whom every Celtic should be eternally grateful also played for St.Anthony's.

We have a lot to thank that club for. :worthy:
Feck I forgot Matt Lynch. My old Maths teacher.

Hard man wee Matt. On and off the park.

I never believed the Tommy story. Good to have some clarity. I've seen the Ants'/Hoops story in a few places. There is a story, again I think in The Glory and The Dream, about a Glasgow Hibernian team not being formed due to, and I'm paraphrasing here, teh strong relationship between Celtic and the Govan club - the Govan club in this instance being the Bens.

I think a lot of what happened back then has been lost in the mists of time. Hard to know for certain what happened.

Was the Glasgow Hibernian story not born out of splits in the Celtic committee over the move away from their charitable origins ?
Thats what I was always told.

Brazil,A Gray,Sturrock,Aitken,Wark,Penis,Black, TB :worthy: ,?, Thompson,Miller,Stein :worthy: McLeish,?,Nicholas,F Gray,Hegarty,Strachan,McLean,Gough,B Scott.

My reckoning there are seven in that picture with Celtic connections.

Looking again that could be Stewart McKimmie between McLeish and Nicholas, and Neil Simpson behind Billy Thompson

Frank McAvennie at the back behind Willie Miller? :ponder:

EDIT: Nope; he didn't get a call-up until 1985.
Billy Thomson behind Willie Miller.
I think he might mean the guy behind billy's right shoulder. I can see the resemblance to Macca

I'd say its dave nareyrather than black. Narey played the previous World Cup . Don't think black was involved in this period for Scotland.
Alan brazil, andy Gray, Paul sturrock, Roy Aiken, John wark, souness, , dave narey, tommy burns, Neil Simpson, billy Thomson , willie miller, jock stein, Alex Mcleish, Eamon bannon, Charlie Nicholas, frank Gray , Paul hegarty, Gordon strachan, Jim McLean , Richard Gough , Brian Scott .
