How many Celt's in the picture including Jock & Gordon?
Aitken, Nicholas, is that Brian Scott the physio?
TB is behind souness and is that Provan behind Charlie? Don't know about the physio Frank McAvennie at the back behind Willie Miller?
EDIT: Nope; he didn't get a call-up until 1985.

Who is that with Jinky, he looks like Joe Jordan's grandad? That's be Sir Stanley, one of the greatest ever.

Think Stanley Matthews. So we are saying that it is not Joe Jordans grandad?

Any significance MB to the fact that he is being led out by a deadco director? Smashing still by the way as is the one you posted of the Celtic-Ayr match, never saw them before.

If I understand it correctly, the Ben's are named after the battle of Benburb, one we won for a change while the 'Ants are in the Hoops? Were they both of Irish heritage and did they have connections to Celtic, tenous or otherwise? Sorry for all the questions.
Aaah Elvis, now we're talking. The wee Govan Old Firm and I know cause I'm a Govan man. St Anthony's - Founded by the men of St Anthony's RC parish and school in Govan (hence my moniker) in 1902. Their colours were green and white hoops (sound familiar) and legend has it that Willie Maley was so impressed he changed Celtic to the hoops after that. Famous Celts Tommy McInally, Bobby Evans and Willie O'Neil all came from the 'Fancy Pants' (the Ants). Many fans will remember the old Ants park and social club at the top of Helen Street where the Celtic buses used to park before games at Ibrox. Republican marches in Govan always finished at the Ants social club and the playing of THE national anthem. In the old park there was a wall with the graffiti 'This is Feenyin Alley'. Sentiments were fine but the spelling was atrocious ! The Bens (the Chookie Hens) were the blue side of the divide. No one knows for certain why that name was chosen but there is an area in Ireland so there must be a connection. Mike Jackson came to Celtic from Benburb in the early 60's. There was a big rivalry in Govan with both of them but it was good natured stuff. God bless St Anthony's and Glasgow Celtic Forgot to ask you, do Saint Anthony's still exist as a local parish side and I'll ask the same for the 'Bens'?

Brian Scott was Scotland physio for a while. I believe he gave it up as he was expected to volunteer for the work. The sad thing about this picture is that I can probably name more players in this than the current Scotland squad. Some decent players there. Think the guy beside Jock maybe Lawrie Reilly RIP who scored five times at Wembley and given it is 1983 pic it may be something to do with the "Last minute Reilly" goal of 1953?

Think Stanley Matthews. What shirt is he wearing? Blackpool?
Edit: Looks too dark to be tangerine, Falkirk maybe?

Forgot to ask you, do Saint Anthony's still exist as a local parish side and I'll ask the same for the 'Bens'? St.Anthony's originally played in Red and White - They changed to the hoops 11/12 months after Celtic started wearing them.
In addition to Bobby Evans, Tommy McInally and Willie O'Neill there a loads of St.Anthony;s players signed by Celtic - Malky McDonald,John Colrain, Jimmy McColl, Matt Lynch, Hugh Hilley, Seton Airlie to name but a few who did us a turn.
Jimmy Gribben to whom every Celtic should be eternally grateful also played for St.Anthony's.
We have a lot to thank that club for.

Mike Jackson told me a story about Willie Harkness when Mike was the Manager at Q of S - I would get banned for repeating it.

Forgot to ask you, do Saint Anthony's still exist as a local parish side and I'll ask the same for the 'Bens'? Yes. In fact they played each other at the weekend in a league game. The Bens won 3 1. There is mention on various sites that the covered terracing at the Bens' ground, Tinto Park, is the largest covered terracing still in existence in Scotland. Might not be for long as (a) there's talk of them moving to a new ground at the south of the existing one and (b) it's in really poor nick. Alex Ferguson claims to be a Benburb supporter and was up at Tinto couple of years ago.
Story goes that the Bens were originally from the Oatlands area. There used to be a shield in teh home dressing room that said they were formed in 1889.
Some sites also say that Tommy Burns played as a goalie for them - got to say I don't think that's true as I only came across it a coukle of years ago.
Years ago the Ants move to Glenboig for a couple of years. Deidco were meant to be buying their ground to turn in to a training facility. Never happened and the Ants came back to Govan before moving to a new ground about a mile and a half up the road.
I'm sure the story about Celtic adopting the hoops after seeing the Ants was in The Glory and the Dream.

Tommy never played in goals for Benburb - Got it checked out as far as the SJFA at Hampden- Never registered and never played in goals in any form for them - He was registered at Maryhill.
St.Ant's historian told me they actually started wearing the hoops about a year after Celtic.

Forgot to ask you, do Saint Anthony's still exist as a local parish side and I'll ask the same for the 'Bens'? St Anthonys no longer a parish team but very closely involved with local community. The old parish is still going strong but the school has been converted into business units. My old class is a venetian blind makers now
Worth pointing out that neither the Ants or the Bens ever had any sectarian policies which others practiced.
