Back onto the 'speedway' again sorry

Was sifting through old 'views' and programmes in the loft last night and came across an old edition of 'The Celt' (issue # 20, May 1988) in which there is a cover shot and a 2 page article on the Celtic Park speedway.

The cover shot shows two bikers taking the bend at the Rangers End, compare this shot to the original shot I found and it might have just been taken before the 'crash'!! I don't have a scanner sorry, so apologies forthe image quality.

The thrill of the period! A skidding roaring flashing dashing spectacle - Thats real dirt track racing!

Admission to Ground (inc tax) 1/2

The article which is taken from Speedway Collectors Review (December 1978) reads as follows:

The first meeting was held Saturday 28th April in front of a crowd of 5,000. Reports say the machines ''churned up the track like an Atlantic Liner tilted at 45 degrees''. It was exhilarating and pulsating but not recommended for those with a weak heart. Take a look at the cover photo again as Harry Lewis heads for the crowd who are nonchalantly leaning over the fence only feet away. The following week Celtic played Rangers in a rather bruising Charity Cup match and at half-time the 26,000 crowd were treated to a couple of exhibition races with a crowd of 10,000 turning up in the evening. In 1963 the Celtic board was approached with a view to re-staging speedway at it's original home, but with ground improvements in the pipe-line the application was rejected. Nevertheless, if you were to venture to Shawfeild Stadium any Friday night this summer to watch the local 'Glasgow Tigers' race round the arena where Celtic were so often the visitors, you will see in the distance the four towering pylons of Celtic Park only a mile away, so near to the inception of 'dirt track' racing.

If we could get hold of that magazine there might yet be more photos and info

Looks like Bobby is giving Sir Greetin' faced from Govan the Harvey Smith's but we all know he was too much of a gentleman.

Also never realised Davie cattenach played against Rangers. From September 1967.

Think this was the game Davie made a horrendous back pass and I think it was Willie Johnston? nicked in and scored.

Well spotted, I was hoping that would last a bit longer

What I noticed is 'Faither' wearing gloves, in lots of Celtic images he is glove-less :ponder: ... maybe weather depending!!

Sadly the Huns won that game 1-0 with a goal from Persson; we had a perfectly good goal disallowed for offside after the Buzz Bomb took the ball past McKinnon and stuck it past Martin. The linesman only flagged for offside once the ball was in the net. :ponder:

We had to endure the Huns chanting 'Champions of Europe!!' :cuckoo: at the end of the game.

Back right is Paul Wilson
Ma first thought actually was Paul Wilson believe it or not :o
But somehow ah convinced masel that if ye look at the bhoy's arms
they don't look dark enough tae be Paul :ph43r:
Then the date of 1967 put me off him as well - because ahm sure ah read
once that Big Jock signed him in '67 and farmed him straight out tae Maryhill
or somebody like that, so that mebbe he never turned out for us at that time :ponder:
It might well be him, but a wee naggin doubt still remains :brickwall:
I'm certain that isn't Paul Wilson, but I don't know who it is.

About half a dozen pages back I was able to name all in this pic, except the two players at the back right. :ponder:

This is the game where the Huns protested* about Jim Callaghan's failure to order off Big Yogi after he fouled Junkie Johnston when he was already cautioned.

The win meant we won the LC section.

*In a dignified manner, of course.
