I have loads of recollections of auld school Tims and what they thought of Wharton - They thought he was a hun fud - You should hear what ex players like Auld or Cesar have to say about him.

Cgaf where he came from - For decades there were more huns living in and around Parkhead than Tims similarly there were plenty of good Tims down Govan - Being brought up in the East End means nothing as far as football is concerned except walking in certain areas could get you a sore face or tragically in the case of the young bhoy Mark Scott it cost him his life due to that coward Campbell.

Maybe Wharton did watch Celtic - I know for a fact Charlie Miller used to follow Celtic and attend games - He still ended up a hun fud.

Every Celtic fan I know from Wharton's era (myself included ) thought he was a biased masonic hun bastard.
Steady on now RQT

Here's my take on Wharton...

Back in the day people would be more likely to go and wtach their local team but it didn't mean you supported them.

My Da was Govan born and bred and was as big a Tim as you'll find.

However in his younger days he thought nothing of going along with some mates to watch games at Ibrox (only midweek games when Celtic weren't playing) and he fondly recalls Motherwell taking five of them in a cup replay and watching some of the great Euro teams of the period, Real, Eintracht, Spurs and Wolves.

These days I wouldn't be seen dead in there not even when we're playing but the point I'm making is that in those days they probably didn't even have a TV so it was either football or the pictures for entertainment.

Just noticed that we have passed a thousand pages on this thread

I can't describe how entertaining I have found this to be, both the pics and the stories. Magic. This is easily the best thread on the Timternet.

Well done to GR for starting it back in 2011 and well done to all who have contributed pics :worthy:

Sir Furious for all he is thought to be a hun dobber was the exact same - He even admitted it at Sean Fallon's funeral from the pulpit when he gave a eulogy on Sean - He said his auld fella ran CSC bus but he started to follow the huns because they had the better team and played better football which from what I can gather they were for the most part a better team at the time whereas we could be good but also rank rotten with inconsistency. Ferguson even spoke about his auld fella asking him why he supported that mob.

My auld fella God Bless him never set foot in the Cesspit to watch them unless we were playing them but I do remember him telling me tales of going through to Easter Road, Tynecastle, Shawfield, ,Fir Park etc to watch what he and my Uncles and Granda would hope to be good games with good players.

And fwiw my auld fella was in the RTQ camp about Wharton.

You're right about times changing, with next to no football on TV. As lads growing up in the Calton we used to go to reserve games at CP on Friday evenings and if Celtic were away on a Saturday I'd go to Shawfield with my Clyde supporting pal.

Later as a young man, when Celtic we were away, as an alternative to snooker between pub sessions, we'd sometimes go to Ibrox but were soon outed for clapping too "sportingly " at opposition goals!

Can't see that happening nowadays.

I knew he was old when he joined us but that is ridiculous
Slovan Bratislava away; I think that dude is either Lubo's dad or uncle.

To think we could've won the ECWC that year (when we finished eights points behind Deidco in the league), but for the insane tactics away to MTK when we were 3-0 ahead from the first leg. :nono:
Found a pic of Anton Moravcik; imo, there is a strong physical resemblance to Lubo. Decide for yourself:

Might that be one Stuart Gray, Eddies son who played once for the first team?
I think he played a bit more than once. Probably managed a handful of games.

With re. to Wharton, as a boy I can recall my old man ranting about him being rather large, not very straight, aquamarine appendage illegitimate person.

My dad was from Maryhill, and would go and watch Thistle occasionally, apparently, according to my brother, he was a steward there for a short time. He kept that quiet!

No idea about that guy but Lubo has a young nephew playing in midfield for Nitra just now which is where Lubo started out.

Creative midfielder you say? :hmmm:

You could be describing my young days in Govan. My family were Tims from way back , and although my Da ran a Celtic bus , it was from Kinning Park.

Saturdays were usually spent up at the Fifty Pitches in the morning playing for the school , ( St Anthony's ) and having no money to get across to Celtic Park, going with mates later to watch Rangers at home. "Lifted in" at the turnstiles, or went in at the last twenty minutes when the gates opened. Regularly until I was twelve or so.

Often watched European teams play there too , and never thought anything of it . It was just the way it was . There was never any doubt though where my allegiances lay , and all my hun mates knew it, and accepted it no problem.

Changed days.
