Phil Clarke was a member of the Hibernian team which won the Scottish Cup in 1887. Doesn't look as though he played a competitive game for Celtic though.

The Huns' end is covered: that was completed prior to 68/69 starting; the old stand enclosure was re-roofed gone by 71/72.

Maybe the same game :ponder:
I think when compared to that already posted, this pic strongly indicates Bayview:

Posted Image

The lighting pylons are similar to those in the first pic posted.
I looked at the East Fife site with some great pictures of the old Bayview.
Seems to be very few photos around of the old Boghead Park in Dumbarton.
Boghead was smaller than Bayview.
Boghead had 3 small stands in it plus cover behind each goals, one of the covers behind the goal was brought from a disused railway station at Turnberry in the late 1950s.

Even Closer

The pitch looks like a ploughed field. Must be close season.
We rarely got crowds that big in the early days.

It could either be a recruitment day which would surprise me or even a Scotland v England game between 1894 and 1900.
John McLaughlin Celtic chairman and SFA President in 1899 proposed a 'patriotic fund' for the families of those fighting in the Boer War whuch caused some ructions as the Boers were regarded as the anti imperialists of the time. There wasn't much controversy when Celtic Park was later used as a recruiting station for World War 1 complete with half time announcements to 'join up before the fun's over'.Celtic's desire to integrate and gain 'respectability' in the society they were in is often underestimated.Puts the poppy controversy in some context as well..
Interesting post, things must have roughly remained that way from WW1 until events nearer to home 50 or 60 years late.
Conscription for WW2 happens in 1939 and remains in place until the last batch in 1958 when it was phased out.
8 million passed though the forces by this means as against the much smaller amount who volunteered.
NI was exempt.
If you closely at Celtic crowds pictures from the 1950s, service uniforms can be seen dotted around the crowd.
Think possibly one or two of the Lisbon Lions went through their National Service.
Ronnie Simpson would certainly have been old enough as would big Billy, who might have just missed it.
When the Save the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders campaign was asking for signatures outside the gates of Hampden in 1968, i don't remember anything other than crowds lining up to sign.
Back in the early days of the Celtic Supporters Association,1944/45, they gave free membership to those serving overseas.
Maybe its still is the case.

Yes he scored the equaliser in that final against Dumbarton, Willie Groves scored the winner, this was probably the only game Phil Clarke ever played for Celtic, Pat Dowling who is sitting opposite him played many games for Celtic, he was also a Hibs player at the time, Dowling also played for Port Glasgow against Celtic in Dec 1888.

Phil Clarke also scored the Celtic goal that day against the Corinthians in a 3-1 defeat at the Oval, Celtic was returning the favour as the Corinthians played us at the 1st Celtic Park, its interesting to see that none of the Maley brothers played that day which was a rarity,

This Rare pic proves to me that the Celtic were still in good terms with the Hibees otherwise why would they do us a favour and loan Celtic 2 of their best players.

Probably the most important & rarest pic of a Celtic team after the one below. :worthy:

An iconic photo of the most influential Celtic player it's ever been my privelege to see. :worthy: :worthy: :worthy:
I'd reckon that's from the Huns game in 1968 or 1969 (can't remember which year) in which we beat the Huns 2-0 with Murdoch and Auld scoring in the first few minutes.

It's a great pic.
Think it's from Sep '70 v huns, Bobby has just scored an absolute cracker to make it 2-0. Big Yogi scored the first.

In the game where it was 2-0 to Celtic within two minutes, the goals were scored at the Huns' end.

Not surprised, seeing that his right leg appears to be a piece of goalpost.

Back onto the 'speedway' again sorry

Was sifting through old 'views' and programmes in the loft last night and came across an old edition of 'The Celt' (issue # 20, May 1988) in which there is a cover shot and a 2 page article on the Celtic Park speedway.

The cover shot shows two bikers taking the bend at the Rangers End, compare this shot to the original shot I found and it might have just been taken before the 'crash'!! I don't have a scanner sorry, so apologies forthe image quality.

There is also a copy of a flier which reads:

OPENING TO-NIGHT (Saturday)

Racing to start 6.30
BROADSIDING...You must see it! That thrilling new racing skid coming over from Australia never before seen in Scotland.
AUSTRALIAN AMERICAN AND BRITISH Speed Stars
PADDY DEAN
BILLY GALLOWAY
STEWIE ST GEORGE
SPROUT ELDERS

The thrill of the period! A skidding roaring flashing dashing spectacle - Thats real dirt track racing!

Admission to Ground (inc tax) 1/2
Lower Stand and covered terrace 1/- extra
Grant Stand 3/- inclusive.

The article which is taken from Speedway Collectors Review (December 1978) reads as follows:

The first meeting was held Saturday 28th April in front of a crowd of 5,000. Reports say the machines ''churned up the track like an Atlantic Liner tilted at 45 degrees''. It was exhilarating and pulsating but not recommended for those with a weak heart. Take a look at the cover photo again as Harry Lewis heads for the crowd who are nonchalantly leaning over the fence only feet away. The following week Celtic played Rangers in a rather bruising Charity Cup match and at half-time the 26,000 crowd were treated to a couple of exhibition races with a crowd of 10,000 turning up in the evening. In 1963 the Celtic board was approached with a view to re-staging speedway at it's original home, but with ground improvements in the pipe-line the application was rejected. Nevertheless, if you were to venture to Shawfeild Stadium any Friday night this summer to watch the local 'Glasgow Tigers' race round the arena where Celtic were so often the visitors, you will see in the distance the four towering pylons of Celtic Park only a mile away, so near to the inception of 'dirt track' racing.

If we could get hold of that magazine there might yet be more photos and info
