I noticed a few mentions of this in the weekend games threads. It`s pretty big news though so I thought it maybe merits a thread of it`s own.
Terrible thing to happen to Beckham. He was a cert to be included in the World Cup squad until his injury last night. One of the very few people in football with absolutely no Celtic connections I have tremendous respect for, I`ve admired him since pretty much way back after France `98 and the disgraceful way he was treated by the press and basically the vast majority of people in the country(bar Man Utd fans obviously) who blamed him entirely for Englands world cup exit. I thought the way he handled himself back then on and off the pitch was magnificent.

A true top class player who at the peak of his career was undoubtedly amongst the finest midfielders in world football as well as being a fantastic ambassador for the game.
I`ve heard a few snippets on SSN earlier today alluding to the fact that given his age this could be the end for Beckham completely. I`m not so sure about that, I think he`ll be back although the chances of him appearing in a major tournament for England again seem unlikely.

Last week in the Man Utd/ Milan game it brought a smile to face when I heard the reception given to him by the Utd fans.

He is a fantastic player. Already been told he has a place at AC Milan next season if he feels up to it.

Good guy and a very good player (though not as good as the English liked out make out in his prime).
Disgracefully treated at times by a country that he gave his all for. Practically dragged them through the Euro 2004 qualifying by himself.

Wouldn't feel too sorry for many of the England team if this happened to them, but I do for him.

Me is sad fo the Beckham. :Bye:

His love for Man Utd and the fallout of the argument with Fergie completely fecked his career. Fair enough Real Madrid was a good move but he should have bitten the bullet after that and came back to the Premiership.

Great footballer and far more intelligent than he gets credit for. Even how he has handled his injury shows how clever he is. No time wasted whatsoever and delaying when you get an achilles injury can cost you your career.

I think he'll come back in club football but his international career is probably over. Shame, as I was looking forward to seeing if he had a part to play for England in the World Cup.

Best crosser of a ball I've seen. Ferguson got the best out of him by signing the right men to complement him, Yorke and Cole. He always looked a better player with Gary Neville supplying him with good clean ball.

I really felt England had a good chance of winning the WC but they seemed to only have about 13 real quality players, that amount drops down now Beckham, Cole and Brown appear to be out.
Feel sorry for Beckham as he probably deserves to play in this tournament, on a personal note i'm always garunteed to get to watch any game he is in because the Mrs thinks he's bootylicious so thats a bit of a pisser.

I've a lot of respect for Beckham. A true professional who done tremendously well. At one point I think he carried England. Brilliant right foot - best crosser of a ball I've seen.

probably the first player who was so over-rated he went full-circe and became under-rated - it became popular to criticise him to make yourself look like you "knew about football", and weren't just driven by who was most popular.

truth is, he was a very, very good player and as has been said, carried england at one point. a phenomenally hard-working player who never shirked a challenge and is probably up there with scholes and possibly gerrard as one of the few players with genuinely world-class technique that england have had in the past few years. i have never seen a delivery like his before, and ironically had he stuck around for a couple of years, he could have won far more with united - they always seemed to stick someone like park or hargreaves wide right, rather than an out-and-out winger. it would have been a role made for beckham.

I really like Beckham, both as a player & as a person.

I admire what he's accomplished in his career & do feel bad for him and the timing of this injury.

There are no doubts for me about whether or not he'll be back playing football again; the nick he's kept himself in physically over the years will ensure he gets another season at least. In terms of missing the WC though, devastated for him. At least it lowers England's chances of winning the thing now IMO.

It's a real personal shame for Beckham. Whether it's going to have a big impact on England's progress in SA is something else. His England role these days seems to have an element of the talismanic about it, and on that basis he could still be taken along to help gee up and/or focus the minds of the younger players (presuming he was decently mobile by then, and could deal with just being a spectator). He remains a great dead ball player and crosser (the whip he can get on a ball is still a thing of beauty), and always gives his all on the pitch, but he's 34, and we all saw what a young(er) Manchester United team did to Beckham and his fellow A. C. Milan tricenarians recently. A horrible thing for him to have to deal with, but maybe not a disaster for Capello.

I might as well come clean in this thread and admit that I'm English :ph43r: (completely English, not half Irish or half Scottish), and the comments posted in the forum re. Beckham's injury have been lovely to read; informed, measured and sympathetic. Another example, if I needed one, of the sort of thing that made me stick around this place after wandering in to get some gen on MON after he took over at my local club, Villa.
